Cell movement explained by molecular recycling

Feb. 28, 2013 ? Scientists at The University of Manchester have identified the method by which cells control the recycling of molecules, a process that is essential for them to move. The discovery provides researchers with a better understanding of how our bodies heal wounds.

Working under Professor Martin Humphries, the Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences, Dr Mark Morgan and his team at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Cell Matrix Research studied the role of integrins. These molecules are able to grab hold of the fibres surrounding the cell, like hands, allowing the cell to drag its self along. However, there are several types of integrin on the cell surface and they all have different properties which affect how quickly the cell can move.

Once they have been used by the cell, integrins are moved from the surface to a store inside the cell. When the time is right they are recycled back to the cell surface where they can bind with the surrounding fibres once again.

What the team uncovered is the method by which cells dynamically control the type of integrins that are recycled. They found that another molecule on the surface of the cell, called syndecan-4, is able to detect and interpret subtle changes in the cell's surroundings to decide how it should respond. By regulating where and when the different integrins are delivered to the cell surface, syndecan-4 precisely regulates cell movement and exploration.

Dr Morgan says: "Syndecan-4 plays a critical role in regulating wound healing, so ultimately, we hope that this work will inform the development of novel therapeutic strategies to improve wound healing."

Most cells in the body are able to crawl through the dense network of fibres that surround them. This migration process is essential for repairing wounds, tracking down infection and maintaining tissue function.

In order for a cell to move efficiently, it needs to precisely control which integrins are able to bind to the fibres. At certain times and places they need to bind strongly, whereas at other points they need to bind more weakly, and only when these processes are regulated appropriately can a cell migrate properly.

By studying the movement of fibroblast cells using sophisticated imaging techniques, Dr Morgan and the team identified the role of Syndecan-4. They found that it decodes the vast array of signals outside the cell and functions as a molecular switch to dictate whether the strong or weak binding integrins are recycled.

Dr Morgan explains: "When we changed the way Syndecan-4 senses the environment outside the cell, we were able to alter the way that it transmits signals into the cell and control integrin recycling. By manipulating the molecules in this way we found that we could either force the cells to move in a fast forward motion or stop altogether."

Their findings have been published in the journal Developmental Cell.

The next step will be to investigate how Syndecan-4 can be manipulated to control cell movement with a view to developing novel therapeutic strategies to improve wound healing. It will also be important to test whether this mechanism is involved in tumour progression and metastasis as disruptions in cell movement are often seen in cancer, as well as in vascular disorders and chronic inflammatory disease.

Dust from Africa affects snowfall in California

By Alicia Chang
AP

LOS ANGELES?? One of the driest spots on Earth ? the Sahara desert ? is increasingly responsible for snow and rain half a world away in the western U.S., a new study released Thursday found.

It's no secret that winds carrying dust, soot and even germs make transcontinental journeys through the upper atmosphere that can affect the weather thousands of miles away. Yet little is known about the impact of foreign pollutants on the West Coast, which relies on mountain snowmelt for its water needs.

Previous studies hinted these jet-setting particles may retard rainfall in the Sierra Nevada mountains in Northern California by reducing the size of water droplets in clouds. But scientists who flew through storm clouds in an aircraft, measured rain and snow and analyzed satellite imagery found the opposite: Far-flung dust and germs can help stimulate precipitation.

During the 2011 winter, a team from the University of California, San Diego and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration traced particles suspended in clouds over the Sierra to distant origins ? from the skies over the arid Sahara that later mingled with other pollutants in China and Mongolia before crossing the Pacific.

The days with the most particles in the clouds were also "days when we see the most snow on the ground," said study leader Kimberly Prather, an atmospheric chemistry professor at UC San Diego, whose study was published online Thursday in the journal Science.

Scientists believe wafting dust, grit and microbes ? including bacteria and viruses ? can spur the formation of ice crystals in clouds that in turn can influence how much rain or snow falls.

For years, governments and utilities in California and other Western states have used cloud seeding, in which a chemical vapor is sprayed into clouds, in a bid to increase rainfall.

The new study shows how "Mother Nature has figured out how to give us more precipitation" and that may lead to changes in cloud-seeding efforts, which can be hit-or-miss, Prather said.

David J. Smith at the NASA Kennedy Space Center said it was refreshing to see measurements from the ground, air and orbit to tackle how airborne particles affected Northern California snowfall.

"Such a comprehensive approach is the only way to thoroughly examine global transport" of particles, Smith, who had no role in the research, said in an email.

JPMorgan cuts 19,000 jobs, calls it a good sign

JPMorgan cuts 15,000 jobs from its troubled mortgage sector, citing healthier home mortgages. The other 4,000 job cuts come from consumer banking.

JPMorgan?will trim about 19,000 jobs over the next two years but cast a positive spin on the news: It is shrinking the unit it had beefed up to handle troubled mortgages.

The bulk of the cuts, about 15,000, will come at the mortgage unit, which had swelled to about 50,000 workers from a pre-financial crisis roster of 20,000 because the bank needed more people to process defaulted mortgages. The bank said it hopes to find jobs in other parts of the company for displaced workers through a "redeployment" program.

The rest of the cuts, about 4,000, will come from the consumer banking business, mostly the branches. JPMorgan?said those cuts will come through attrition, not lay-offs.

The bank noted that it's also adding jobs in certain areas, such as commercial banking and asset management. Overall, it expects its payroll to be down by about 17,000 at the end of 2014. That means it would fall to about 242,000 from its current 259,000, a 6.5 percent reduction.

The cuts were revealed in a presentation to investors Tuesday and are part of the bank's bigger cost-cutting campaign.?JPMorgan?increased its profits and revenue in 2012 and has weathered the financial crisis and its aftermath better than most.

But like its peers, it's facing a host of challenges. Banks are navigating new government regulations that have crimped some old sources of revenue, like issuing credit cards to students. The banks have also said that complying with the new regulations is costing them more money.

The move could signal a new direction for staffing:?JPMorgan?already shed about 1,200 jobs in 2012, after adding jobs in 2011 and 2010.

Bank of America, Citigroup, Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs all trimmed jobs in 2012. Morgan Stanley's current round of job cuts has focused on senior ranks and investment bankers. Bank of America has also said it needs fewer people to work through problem mortgages, though it has cut jobs in other areas. Citigroup is scaling back in countries that it no longer sees as growth engines.

Shares of New York-based?JPMorgan?Chase & Co. ended Tuesday down 10 cents at $47.60. The stock has gained about 24 percent in the past year.

Fairfax County Teachers: 'I Can't Sustain This' - Vienna, VA Patch

Dan Hale has been a teacher in Fairfax County Public Schools for 20 years, but he?s never felt or seen his colleagues as overwhelmed as they are today.

He used to know his students as readers and as writers, he says; now he only knows them as bits of data or ECART scores; pacing points and percentages.

And after spending far more than eight hours at school, he leaves (with work in tow) thinking ?What am I doing tomorrow?? ? planning time in the context of the school day, he says, is nearly nonexistent.

The story was one of many shared by a few hundred teachers Monday night at a town hall sponsored by one of the county?s largest teachers unions, an effort to better connect school board members with teachers and workload issues that have persisted for at least half a decade, the union says.

For years, both the Fairfax County Federation of Teachers, which sponsored Monday?s event, and the Fairfax Education Association have asked school board members for help in reducing some of their requirements and responsibilities and the shrinking amount of time in which they have to do it.

This year, teachers said Monday, has been the worst year yet.

And morale is low.

?I used to get up in the morning and go, ?I love my job,?? one longtime teacher told school board members Monday. ?That?s not the case anymore and that?s sad.?

School Board member Elizabeth Schultz (Springfield), one of 10 members who fielded teacher concerns in a ballroom at the Fairview Park Marriot in Falls Church, said it was time for a solution.

?This has been brewing for quite some time,? Schultz said after the event. ?We need to fix it.?

The board is planning on a work session on the issue in April.

Growing Responsibilities, but No Extra Time

Along with keeping pace with the state of Virginia?s Standards of Learning tests and a new teacher evaluation system, teachers are also dealing with new elementary school report cards that make grading take three times as long as it used to, assessment tools that require more data and analysis and the rollout of online textbooks, among other technology tools.

As enrollment swells, so too have class sizes, and with each additional student comes even more hours to prep, coach, test and assess them.

Yet no responsibilities have been taken away, nor has more time been given to accommodate them, teachers say. Pay?also been more or less ?stagnant for years,? they say

One teacher said he once had two and a half hours of planning time each week; now, it?s about an hour and 20 minutes.

Tasks have ?been piling up like one rock after another on our chest while [we?re] being told ?you better do well or else,?? one teacher said.

Since the beginning of this school year, Lynn Schmauder, a math teacher who has 130 students this year at Woodson High School, has spent at least 36 hours giving after-school help, nearly 20 in parent-teacher conferences, 37 hours replying to parent emails ? and what amounts to 41 days, on top of her day to day responsibilities, grading papers.

The number of weekends she?s been able to put the work away: 0.

Schmauder, who is in her third year of teaching after 15 years with the Department of Defense, said she either needs more help or less students. Neither is an option about which she is optimistic, given the system?s budget forecast.

?What I know is that I can?t sustain this,? said Schmauder, who said she feels like she is missing out on her children?s lives.

Outlook and Solutions

The system?s proposed budget includes a 1 percent market rate adjustment for all teachers ? but the modest increase isn?t enough to keep up with teacher workload, they say.

Administrators have also said they?re worried it isn?t enough to keep the system competitive with other jurisdictions, either.

Teachers called on administrators ? from the superintendent to the leadership team to the leaders of each of the system?s clusters ? to spend more time in schools, shadowing teachers to get a better understanding of what their day is like.

When teachers do give leadership feedback about best practices or pilots, it?s often not reflected in what is handed back to them, teachers said Monday, pointing to the recent widely-criticized rollout of an online math textbook ?program.

Megan McLaughlin (Braddock) said Monday it seemed ?the feedback that comes from the front lines doesn?t always come back effectively at the top.?

What?s more, teachers said, students are suffering, too. There?s no time left to host colonial days, or work math into a lesson on cooking ? the kind of hands-on activities that bring concepts full circle and keep school experiences from being a string of ?factoids,? teachers said.

Schultz said the board is in a better position than in years past to act on some of the issues outlined because ?the tenor of the board has changed,? she said.

There are more people willing to ask difficult questions and have ?actual engagement,? she said.

?The reason we ask difficult questions is because our decisions have consequences, and this is the bad side of those consequences,? she said. ?We need to have actual engagement. We need to listen to the public.?

FCFT President Steve Greenburg and school board members said Monday was not the end of the dialogue ? it was the beginning of a path that would hopefully lead at last to some solutions.

?We all want our kids to succeed,? board member Patty Reed (Providence) said, offering her support to a better classroom environment. ?Let?s not forget that.?

Second SpaceX space station resupply flight ready to go

Feb. 25, 2013 ? The second International Space Station Commercial Resupply Services flight by Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) is set for liftoff at 10:10 a.m. EST on March 1 from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

Carried by a Falcon 9 rocket, the Dragon spacecraft will ferry 1,268 pounds of supplies for the space station crew and for experiments being conducted aboard the orbiting laboratory.

The Falcon 9 and Dragon were manufactured at SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, Calif., and arrived at the Florida launch site by truck. The rocket, topped with the spacecraft, stands 157-feet tall.

The two-stage rocket uses nine engines to power the first stage, generating 855,000 pounds of thrust at sea level, rising to nearly 1,000,000 pounds of thrust as Falcon 9 climbs out of Earth's atmosphere. One engine powers the second stage to complete the climb to space. The 14.4-foot-tall Dragon spacecraft is capable of carrying more than 7,000 pounds of cargo split between pressurized and unpressurized sections.

On March 2, Expedition 34 Commander Kevin Ford and Flight Engineer Tom Marshburn of NASA are scheduled use the station's robot arm to grapple Dragon following its rendezvous with the orbiting outpost. Ground commands will be sent to attach the spacecraft to the Earth-facing port of the station's Harmony module where it will remain for a few weeks while astronauts unload cargo. The crew then will load more than 2,600 pounds of experiment samples and equipment for return to Earth.

Dragon is scheduled for a parachute-assisted splashdown in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Baja California on March 25.

This SpaceX flight is the second of at least 12 missions to the space station that the company will fly for NASA under the Commercial Resupply Services contract.

Sequester: 'It's your fault....No, your fault!' (+video)

With just five days to go until the sequester's automatic spending cuts kick in, what's Washington doing about it? Not negotiating like responsible adults, but mainly pointing fingers of blame.

By Brad Knickerbocker,?Staff writer / February 24, 2013

President Obama pauses as he speaks about the sequester last week. The White House and congressional Republicans are arguing over who's responsible for the across-the-board spending cuts that could kick in Friday.

Just five days before the ?sequester? and its automatic across-the-board spending cuts kicks in, Washington seems frozen in its inability to deal with what most people think is a terrible way to address the federal deficit ? no apparent negotiations between the Obama administration and congressional Republicans, assigning political blame the main activity.

The finger-pointing began Saturday with President Obama?s weekly radio/web address and the Republican response from Senator John Hoeven of North Dakota.

?Are Republicans in Congress really willing to let these cuts fall on our kids? schools and mental health care just to protect tax loopholes for corporate jet owners?? Obama asked.??Are they really willing to slash military health care and the border patrol just because they refuse to eliminate tax breaks for big oil companies?? Are they seriously prepared to inflict more pain on the middle class because they refuse to ask anything more of those at the very top??These are the questions Republicans in Congress need to ask themselves.?

RECOMMENDED:?Sequester 101: What happens if $85 billion in cuts hit on March 1

Sen. Hoeven countered with, ?Why won?t he work with us? And the answer, quite simply, is because he wants higher taxes.?

?President Obama ? not only wants higher taxes; he?s actually preventing economic growth and private-sector job creation,? he said. ?He is blocking it with more regulation, red tape, and bureaucracy.?

On Sunday, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood repeated his warning that the sequester could mean bad news for travelers as air traffic controllers were furloughed and some small regional airports shut down.

But Mr. LaHood ? a former congressman from Illinois and the lone Republican in the Obama cabinet ? took a shot at his fellow party members too.

"Well, look it, I'm a Republican,? he said on CNN?s ?State of the Nation.? ?My audience is trying to persuade my former colleagues that they need to come to the table with a proposal, which ... they haven't done. While the president has, the Republicans haven't.?

Over on CBS's "Face the Nation,? Education Secretary Arne Duncan warned of the impact just the threat of sequestration is having on his field.

"There are literally teachers now who are getting pink slips, who are getting notices that they can't come back this fall," Mr. Duncan said

Republicans pushed back against such dire warnings.

?Stop sending out your Cabinet secretaries to scare the American people,? Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) said on NBC?s ?Meet the Press.?

"Shame on Ray LaHood," Sen. John McCain responded when asked about the transportation secretary's shot at Republicans on "State of the Union."

As to who?s responsible for the sequester, Sen. McCain pointed to the most-read item in Sunday?s political news: Bob Woodward?s op-ed piece in the Washington Post.

Higgins and Drew weather the elements to win Rally in the 100 Acre Wood

Published on February 24, 2013

The race took place over the weekend in Salem, Missouri.

RALLY AMERICA - Not even icy weather could stop David Higgins and Craig Drew from winning the Rally in the 100 Acre Wood .

The sudden arrival of winter ice and snow conditions could not prevent Subaru Rally Team USA's David Higgins and Craig Drew from winning the Rally in the 100 Acre Wood held on February 22-23rd in Salem, Missouri. The hard fought victory gave Higgins his first 100 Acre Wood Rally victory in three attempts at one of the more slippery events in recent memory.

On the first day Higgins and Drew fell behind early to Hoonigan Racing's Ken Block and Alex Gelsomino and to Rockstar Energy Drink Rally Team's Antoine L'Estage and Nathalie Richard until a fateful stage 6, the first nighttime stage. Block suffered frontend damage and L'Estage retired from the event with overheating issues that left Higgins with the overall lead.

It was a disappointing withdrawal for L'Estage who hoped to build on his Championship points lead after winning the Michigan based Sno*Drift Rally in late January.

Block rejoined the event at the beginning of the second day using SuperRally rules, which allows a team to reenter with time penalties, only to retire again from the event with an electrical throttle problem on stage 10. Block held a psychological advantage having previously won six 100 Acre Wood Rallys - the most by any Rally America driver.

Higgins then commanded a six minute lead over Joseph Burk and Alex Kihurani in second place and Lauchlin O'Sullivan and Scott Putnam in third place. Higgins won 9 of the last 10 stages of the day towards his overall victory.

"This is one rally we haven't won before and to win it now is a great feeling especially the way things happened," said Higgins, "Our victory appeared not to be close, but giving the difficulty of the rally and the conditions that margin could have disappeared in an instance."

Higgins is the reigning 2012 Rally America National Championship. With this win Higgins assumes the Championship lead on route to defending his title.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Hollywood's latest films performed tepidly at the box-office on Oscar weekend, with Melissa McCarthy's "Identity Thief" returning to the top spot in its third week of release.

The Universal comedy earned $14.1 million on the weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday, enough to regain the box-office title after losing it last week to 20th Century Fox's "A Good Day to Die Hard." The Bruce Willis action sequel faded domestically, but not overseas, where it took in $35.7 million.

With a cumulative total of $93.7 million, "Identity Thief" is the biggest hit so far in 2013. Though the film has been badly reviewed by critics, the road trip duo of McCarthy and Jason Bateman has proved popular at the multiplexes, where no other comedy has been around to challenge it.

More than anything, "Identity Thief" has proven the stardom of McCarthy, following her breakout performance in "Bridesmaids."

"The holding power of a film always gives you an idea of the strength of its concept or its star," said Nikki Rocco, Universal head of distribution. "In this case, it's both."

With the industry gathering for the Oscars on Sunday, it's always a weekend where moviegoers' attention goes more to the Academy Awards than the movie theater. For the fifth week in a row, the box office was down as compared to last year's business

One of the two new films in wide release, Lionsgate's Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson action film, "Snitch," opened with $13 million. That was a decent but not strong showing for "Snitch" in a year where action films have largely fared poorly.

Though "A God Day to Die Hard," the fourth film in the franchise, led the box office last week, it slid 60 percent in its second week to $10 million. But it continued to dominate internationally, bringing it to a three-week worldwide total to $184.8 million. (It opened a week earlier in some countries.)

Earlier action films from Arnold Schwarzenegger ("The Last Stand"), Jason Statham ("Parker") and Sylvester Stallone ("Bullet to the Head") performed far worse.

The other new wide release was the Weinstein Co.'s "Dark Skies," a PG-13 horror film starring Keri Russell. It debuted with $8.9 million.

The down weekend was unlikely to dampen the Oscar celebration. The nine best picture nominees have largely fared well at the box office. This weekend, eight of them are in the top 21 films.

For the first time since the category's number of nominees was extended in 2009, six of the nominees grossed more than $100 million domestically: "Argo," ''Lincoln," ''Les Miserables," ''Silver Linings Playbook," ''Django Unchained" and "Life of Pi." ''Zero Dark Thirty" missed narrowly with $91.6 million going into the Oscars.

"It's one of the best performing groups of nominees I've ever seen," said Paul Dergarabedian, an analyst for box-office tracker Hollywood.com. "Great night for Hollywood, tough day at the box office."

A box-office bump could follow for Sunday's big winners, though any benefit might be better found overseas, where some of the films are still expanding. The best picture favorite, Ben Affleck's Iran rescue thriller "Argo," is already out on DVD in North America.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "Identity Thief," $14 million, ($170,000 international).

2. "Snitch," $13 million.

3. "Escape From Planet Earth," $11 million.

4. "Safe Haven," $10.6 million, ($1.4 million international).

5. "A Good Day to Die Hard," $10 million, ($35.7 million international).

6. "Dark Skies," $8.9 million.

7. "Silver Linings Playbook," $6.1 million, ($5 million international).

8. "Warm Bodies," $4.8 million, ($2.5 million international).

9. "Side Effects," $3.6 million.

10. "Beautiful Creatures," $3.4 million, ($4 million international).

___

Estimated weekend ticket sales at international theaters (excluding the U.S. and Canada) for films distributed overseas by Hollywood studios, according to Rentrak:

1. "A Good Day to Die Hard," $35.7 million.

2. "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," $18.6 million.

Consumers Taking on More Credit Card Debt

Consumers Taking on More Credit Card DebtConsumers? borrowing habits took a turn for the worse in the final three months of last year, as late payments and outstanding balances rose significantly. However, experts say this is in line with seasonal movements and may not indicate a new emerging trend.

The average amount of debt carried by consumers in the fourth quarter of 2012 rose 2.5 percent to $5,122 from the previous three months, when balances stood at an average of $4,966, according to new data from the credit monitoring bureau TransUnion. However, it should be noted that the totals seen at the end of last year were also down 1.6 percent from the $5,204 observed during the same quarter in 2011.

[Free Resource: Check your credit score and report card for free before applying for a credit card]

At the same time though, the national rate of delinquencies totaling 90 days or more rose to 0.85 percent of all accounts, up from 0.78 percent in the same quarter the previous year, the report said. It also increased somewhat significantly from the third quarter of 2012, when it stood at just 0.75 percent.

Free Credit Check Tool? The fourth quarter traditionally results in higher credit card balances and delinquencies, much of it to do with the holiday shopping season,? said Ezra Becker, vice president of research and consulting in TransUnion?s financial services business unit. ?Though serious delinquencies have risen seven basis points in the last year, average credit card debt has actually dropped, which is a sign that consumers continue to manage their credit well. Both credit card delinquencies and balances are below historic norms.?

The trends seen now are still better than norms seen in recent years, the report said. For every fourth quarter over the previous decade, average 90-day delinquency stood at 1.06 percent of all outstanding balances, and borrowers owed an average of $5,389, both of which are significantly higher than what is being observed today.

Further, the latest findings also showed that consumers are once again steering away from opening new credit cards, as originations in the third quarter of 2012 slipped 2.4 percent on an annual basis, the report said. Further, the rate of new cards granted specifically to those with low credit ratings slipped somewhat to 30.51 percent of all accounts from the previous year?s 30.63 percent.

Consumers drastically changed their borrowing habits during and immediately following the recession, but experts have long predicted that bottomed-out delinquency rates and debts would begin climbing in subsequent years as Americans slowly regained their financial footing.

Japan: Hitachi Seaside Park Water Stage

The eight islands of Japan sprang into existence through Divine Intervention.

The first two gods who came into existence were Izanagi no Mikoto and Izanami no Mikoto, the Exalted Male and Exalted Female. It was their job to make the land for people to live on.

They went to the bridge between heaven and earth and, using a jewel-encrusted halberd, Izanagi and Izanami churned up the sea into a frothy foam. As salty drips of water fell from the tip of the halberd the first island was formed. Its name was Onogoro.

So far, so good. But when Izanagi and Izanami first met on their island, Izanami spoke to Isanagi without being spoken to first. Since she was the female, and this was improper, their first union created badly-formed offspring who were sent off into the sea in boats.

The next time they met, Izanagi was sure to speak first, ensuring the proper rules were followed, and this time they produced eight children, which became the islands of Japan.

I'm sure you did not fail to miss the significance of this myth for the establishment of Japanese formal society.

At present, Japan is the financial capital of Asia. It has the second largest economy in the world and the largest metropolitan area (Tokyo.)

Technically there are three thousand islands making up the Japanese archipelago. Izanagi and Izanami must have been busy little devils with their jewelled halberd...

Japan's culture is highly technical and organized. Everything sparkles and swooshes on silent, miniaturized mechanisms.

They're a world leader in robotics, and the Japanese have the longest life-expectancy on earth.

What to cut: Americans say 'aid to the world?s needy'

President Barack Obama at the White House on Feb. 5, 2013 (Charles Dharapak/AP)If you were in charge of government spending, what programs would you cut to reduce the deficit and maybe take a bite out of the debt? A new poll from the nonpartisan Pew Research Center suggests that the answer is: Nothing?well, maybe aid to the world?s poor.

The survey was released one week before automatic across-the-board spending cuts known as sequestration are due to start coming into force.

Sure, Pew found just a few weeks ago that 72 percent of Americans say President Barack Obama and Congress should make cutting the deficit a ?top priority.? And Pew also found that a majority backs Obama?s call for a blend of cuts and tax increases to stem the tide of red ink.

So Pew asked Americans whether they wanted to cut, maintain or increase spending in 19 areas?from veterans? benefits to infrastructure to Medicare to crime-fighting. The most vulnerable category turned out to be ?aid to the world?s needy,? which 48 percent of respondents said they wanted to decrease, while 49 percent said they wanted to leave it at current levels (28 percent). Those who would like to see aid increased came in at 21 percent.

Thirty-four percent would reduce the State Department?s budget. But they?d have to do it over the objections of 46 percent who said they would leave Secretary of State John Kerry?s ledger as is, and 14 percent who would like to see more cash flow to American diplomacy.

Unemployment aid? Thirty-two percent said cut, 41 percent said maintain, and 24 percent said increase. For military spending, 24 percent cut (down from 30 percent two years ago, Pew notes), 41 percent maintain and 32 percent increase. The safest category was veterans' benefits, with just 6 percent saying they would cut them, compared with 38 percent who said they would keep current levels and 53 percent who said they would increase them.

Partisan disagreements? You bet, found Pew. None of the 19 areas listed got a plurality of Democrats voting to cut. But Republicans weren?t all that eager either: Just foreign aid (70 percent) and unemployment assistance (56 percent) got majority GOP support for cuts.

Fungicide Use Surges, Largely Unmonitored

Fungicide spray Fungicide use is rising, but experts warn that there is inadequate environmental monitoring and information on the chemicals' safety. Image: Flickr/CIAT

Glenn Waller's 100 acres of soybeans in Washington County, Georgia, are the highest yielding in the state. But the "Mr. Efficiency" award winner is worried about rust.

Soybean farmers in the Southeast survived a bout with the crop-destroying fungus in 2005 by using pesticides to halt its spread. But Waller remains worried about a rust resurgence.

"I'm afraid we're going to kind of put it on the back burner and it's going to jump back up and get us,? he said.

Waller, who has farmed for 51 years, increasingly has turned to fungicides to ward off pests and increase his crop yields. Farmers around the country are doing the same, causing an unprecedented surge in fungicide use. But as widespread contamination of waterways near these farms emerges, experts warn that there is inadequate environmental monitoring and information on the chemicals' safety.

"It's concerning," said Jason Belden, an environmental toxicologist at Oklahoma State University. "We have limited toxicological data for a lot of these compounds."

Fungicides are contaminating the majority of water bodies tested in states where there is heavy use, such as in Maine, Idaho and Wisconsin. Some are known to be highly toxic to aquatic creatures, but little is known about whether they are actually harming frogs or other animals in the environment. The potential threats to people are unknown, with new research on lab mice linking them to obesity.

Farmers have historically sprayed fungicides to stop disease. But over the past decade, in an effort to squeeze extra bushels from their crops, they have been spraying more kinds of fungicides on more acres. Wheat, corn, soybeans, citrus and cotton are among the crops that often are sprayed.

The fungicide explosion prompted Kathryn Kuivila, an environmental organic chemist with the U.S. Geological Survey, to see if fungicides were escaping farms and winding up in nearby streams. In a 2012 study of 33 fungicides used on potatoes, Kuivila's lab found that 75 percent of surface waters tested and 58 percent of ground water samples were contaminated with traces of at least one fungicide.

A fungicide called boscalid???used on a variety of crops from food to turf grass???was the most common, found in 72 percent of water samples. The team tested 24 bodies of ground water and shallow water in Maine, Idaho and Wisconsin; the scientists noted that the results may vary nationwide.

The fungicides were found below levels that would kill creatures at the bottom of the food web, such as zooplankton and amphipods, the authors said. But Belden said that doesn't mean there's no threat. Fungicides degrade rapidly so monthly testing in water might not "see all the pulses" of fungicides application, he said. More work is needed to get a better idea of how much aquatic creatures are exposed.

"Is it a red alert that these things should be banned? I don't think so," Belden said. "Is it an alert that we need to do a lot more research relatively quickly to figure out what's going on? I do think that."

There is little information from manufacturers on how much is applied to crops. But all signs suggest that fungicides are now in vogue.

With an estimated $8-billion global market in 2005, before the recent surge, industry experts now predict $21 billion worth of fungicides will be sold annually by 2017.

Spraying of soybean crops quadrupled between 2002 and 2006 in an effort to fight Asian Soybean Rust, according to the latest data available from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Rust is a windblown disease that attacks soybean leaves, causing lesions and eventually killing the plant.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Jermaine Jackson has a new, brighter surname ? Jacksun.

A Los Angeles judge approved the change to singer's name Friday.

The 58-year-old, who shared lead singing duties with his younger brother Michael in the Jackson 5, did not appear in court.

He sought the name change for "artistic reasons" and says it has nothing to do with a recent rift in his family over the care of Michael Jackson's children and family matriarch Katherine Jackson.

His attorney Bret D. Lewis says Jacksun is in Europe performing with his brothers and told him that he was sure it was "a sunny day in California."

Lewis says he doesn't know whether Jacksun will elaborate on the creative reasons for the change.

Are Apple?s China Problems Over?

Technical incompatibility has often been cited as the reason for the absence of a relationship between Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and China Mobile (NYSE:CHL), but that problem may be getting a permanent solution. Apple supplier Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) has announced a new global LTE chip that operates on 40 different wireless network bands.

That includes all existing LTE networks in the world, including the TD-SCDMA band of the world?s largest carrier by number of subscribers.

Qualcomm?s anticipated launch period for the chip in the second half of 2013 would coincide with Apple?s usual annual iPhone refresh cycle.

The RF360 Front-End Solution has been designed to get rid of LTE fragmentation, so manufactures would only need to launch a single handset to support 2G, 3G, 4G LTE, and LTE Advanced networks. Apple launched three different versions of the iPhone 5 in September, but did not have one that could work with China Mobile?s network.

While China Mobile is not an official Apple partner carrier, it already has about 15 million iPhone users on its 2G network?

Year Walk review: iPad horror-puzzle game out-smarts the Slender Man

When was the last time that a game made you feel genuinely smart? When was the last time a game truly made use of the capabilities of the device that it was running on? Braid? Fez? The original Metal Gear Solid's Psycho Mantis fight? For us, it was last night when we finished Year Walk.

Year Walk Screenshot
The story is based on Swedish myth. According to folklore, men would spend all day indoors in pitch-black darkness, before heading into the forest at night on a spiritual stroll that allowed them to see one year into the future - a Year Walk. You take part in a Year Walk, but to tell you any more about it would spoil the game's excellent, twisting plot.

Navigating the icy forest - which is presented in a lovely art style behind a pleasing 'grainy filter' - is handled via a selection of screen-swipes, and most of the time, the only sound you hear is the crunching of your boots in the snow. Most of the time. There are both shocks and creeping scares in here, along with some disturbing revelations that begin to surface as you travel deeper into the game.

What really makes the game stand out, though, is the way it asks you to solve its puzzles. There's no tutorial, and traditional game logic doesn't apply here - you need to think about all the capabilities of your iPad. The only clue we'll give you is that Year Walk isn't afraid to break the fourth-wall...There's a companion app too, which you really should download. Its main purpose is to provide a bit of background to the game. Its main purpose...

While Year Walk isn't that substantial, and may only last you a couple of hours, it's an incredible showcase for the potential of tablet games and will undoubtedly become influential over the next few years. Its conundrums will baffle you, and frustrate at times as you constantly attempt to apply traditional puzzle-game logic to progress - but the self-gratifying pay-off of solving them is immense. Get to the end and you'll truly feel as if you've gone on a journey and learned something new about the way you play games. Not bad for ?2.49, right?

China Defense Ministry Blasts Mandiant Hacking Report

China's defense ministry staged a news conference Wednesday to deny and decry a report that the People's Liberation Army was engaged in cyberwarfare against U.S. corporations, organizations and government agencies. The denial specifically addressed the bombshell Mandiant hacking study, which declared that the PLA's Unit 61398, located near Shanghai, was one of the world's "most aggressive computer hacking operations."

3 Reasons the Bull Market Won't Die | Breakout - Yahoo! Finance

Lee Munson of Portfolio LLC is sad. The otherwise peppy money manager has would-be investors approaching him constantly asking when the market will go down so they can buy stocks. They've been sitting with 40 to 50% cash in their portfolios, hoping for pullback in the market so they can finally put some money to work.

Sadly the market isn't that easy. The last sell-off of any size was ahead of the so-called fiscal cliff. Not many people were rushing into stocks at the time. Once the Cliff was averted stocks gapped higher and haven't looked back since.

In the attached video Munson calls investors' cash hoarding a "mass national problem." He ticks through three things that need to happen for stocks to turn meaningfully south and kill the bull market rally; none of which he believes will occur anytime soon.

1. Fed tightens rates aggressively

Not going to happen unless or until unemployment falls to 6.5% and/or inflation exceeds 2% for an extended period of time. Slight adjustments in the level of quantitative easing aren't a big concern and there's no reason on earth to think Bernanke's Fed is going to shock the system by eliminating stimulus without warning.

2. Stocks get expensive

"We're not even at 14 or 15x earnings right now," Munson howls. "If we were at a historical higher valuation we'd be at 1,675 [on the S&P 500]; we're not even close."

3. Yield Curve inverts

Let's just say the Fed has a pretty good handle on controlling rates.

"It's not about how great the market is, it's about what is going to make it stop. Right now we don't have a single thing that's really going to stop it right now."

Vic Beckham harus siap-siap kalah populer di Paris.

Klub

Kekasih Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Helena Seger (Zimbio)

VIVAbola - Selama ini pesona WAGs (Wives and Girlfriends) selalu menjadi menarik perhatian.

Syrian TV says 53 killed in Damascus car bomb

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) ? Syrian state TV says 53 people were killed and more than 200 wounded in a car bomb attack near the headquarters of the ruling Baath party in central Damascus.

The bomb was one of at least three attacks in the heart of the city on Thursday. A second blast shook another neighborhood and mortar rounds exploded near the Syrian Army General Command.

The Britain-based activist group the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 42 had been killed in the car bombing, most of them civilians.

The difference in the death tolls could not be immediately reconciled.

Is Mandiant a 'digital Blackwater'?

(AP) ? When Kevin Mandia, a retired military cybercrime investigator, decided to expose China as a primary threat to U.S. computer networks, he didn't have to consult with American diplomats in Beijing or declassify tactics to safely reveal government secrets.

He pulled together a 76-page report based on seven years of his company's work and produced the most detailed public account yet of how, he says, the Chinese government has been rummaging through the networks of major U.S. companies.

It wasn't news to Mandia's commercial competitors, or the federal government, that systematic attacks could be traced back to a nondescript office building outside Shanghai that he believes was run by the Chinese army. What was remarkable was that the extraordinary details ? code names of hackers, one's affection for Harry Potter and how they stole sensitive trade secrets and passwords ? came from a private security company without the official backing of the U.S. military or intelligence agencies that are responsible for protecting the nation from a cyberattack.

The report, embraced by stakeholders in both government and industry, represented a notable alignment of interests in Washington: The Obama administration has pressed for new evidence of Chinese hacking that it can leverage in diplomatic talks ? without revealing secrets about its own hacking investigations ? and Mandiant makes headlines with its sensational revelations.

The report also shows the balance of power in America's cyberwar has shifted into the hands of the $30 billion-a-year computer security industry.

"We probably kicked the hornet's nest," Mandia, 42, said in an interview at the Alexandria, Va., headquarters of Mandiant. But "tolerance is just dwindling. People are tired of the status quo of being hacked with impunity, where there's no risk or repercussion."

China has disputed Mandiant's allegations.

Mandiant, which took in some $100 million in business last year ? up 60 percent from the year before ? is part of a lucrative and exploding market that goes beyond antivirus software and firewalls. These "digital forensics" outfits can tell a business whether its systems have been breached and ? if the company pays extra ? who attacked it.

Mandiant's staff is stocked with retired intelligence and law enforcement agents who specialize in computer forensics and promise their clients confidentiality and control over the investigation. In turn, they get unfettered access to the crime scene and resources to fix the problem (Mandiant won't say exactly how much it charges, but it's estimated to average around $400 an hour).

The growing reliance on contractors like Mandiant has been compared to that enjoyed by the military and State Department contractor formerly known as Blackwater, which provided physical security to diplomats and other VIPs during the Iraq war. Officials inside and outside government say that's not a bad thing; contractors can often act more quickly than the government and without as much red tape. There are also serious privacy concerns: Most U.S. citizens don't want the government to access their bank accounts, for example, even if China is attacking their bank.

"The government doesn't have the capacity," said Shawn Henry, a former FBI executive assistant director who works for a Mandiant competitor, CrowdStrike. "There are a lot of people working hard. But the structures aren't there."

Michael DuBose, another former senior Justice Department official who works at a different Mandiant competitor, Kroll Advisory Solutions, added: "I think there's a recognition that the government can't stand at the entry point of the Internet to the United States and shield it from all bad things coming in."

Since Mandiant released its report this week, government officials and lawmakers have publicly embraced its findings. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the Democratic chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, hailed Mandiant for exposing China as a problem. She called its report "sobering" and said she hoped it would spur an international agreement to protect companies from cyber-espionage.

"It's a forcing function in the private sector, and frankly ... it's a forcing function with the government," said retired Air Force Gen. Michael Hayden, the former director of the CIA and the National Security Agency who now works for the Chertoff Group, a security consulting firm.

Mandiant's report raises questions, too, about the extent to which private companies are in control of defending the nation's most crucial networks, like power companies and water treatment plants. Another question is what rules of engagement private companies might rely on. When does a company strike back?

Mandia and his competitors said they are beholden to U.S. and international laws, which prohibit the type of intrusive acts they accuse China of taking. Mandia also says his clients aren't interested in starting a cyberwar with foreign hackers, in part because they are so vulnerable.

"The only time (hacking back) would really work is if we got all the bad guys out of our networks in the first place," he said. "Then you can start playing that game."

Still, publishing the hacking report was itself an offensive shot across China's bow.

Mandia said he started his company in 2004 after years in the private sector because there was no company focused on investigating intrusions. With a master's degree in forensic science from George Washington University, he became Mandiant's sole employee and, two years later, got a cash infusion from a college friend. Now, he oversees some 330 employees and the field is growing rapidly. He says he used to see maybe three major incidents a month when he started his business; now he estimates there can be anywhere from 30 to 100 incidents a month.

Mandia is hardly alone. A former co-worker, Stuart McClure, recently started his own company, called Cylance. He received $15 billion in venture capital funds for his business, which he says is distinctive because of its focus on prevention. McClure said in general he sees the future of cyberdefense residing in the private sector, with its deeper pockets and less red tape.

"With a commercial entity, you can get more creative," McClure said.

As for any problems they might cause in diplomatic or security circles for the federal government, Mandia and his competitors say that's not really on their radar, although he's hiring attorneys to help him monitor changing U.S. policies and regulations. But as a tech guy, he says he's focused on stopping intrusions.

"We're security guys," Mandia said. "We're not diplomats."
