8 Tech Products That Won?t Make it to 2014

Who can forget when HP spent $1.2 billion for Palm, only to give up on its entire ecosystem just 57 days after launching the first webOS tablet? Does anyone even remember Microsoft?s Kin phones, which disappeared in 2010 after just 48 days on the market? That?s faster than most Kardashian marriages.

Right now, there are a number of highly touted new technologies getting ready to take their place in the history books . . . as footnotes. These eight tech products aren?t likely to make it to 2014.

Windows RT

When Microsoft first announced that it was making a version of Windows 8 for ARM-based processors, we were excited by the possibility of a new generation low-power devices. Unfortunately, rather than doing what it does best -- providing a flexible platform for partners and developers -- Microsoft put Windows RT on lockdown, preventing it from running desktop applications and limiting it to a handful of devices that don?t cost much less than their Windows 8 counterparts.

Even worse, the company gave Windows RT the same exact UI as Windows 8, potentially confusing consumers who buy RT devices thinking that they?re getting the ?real? Windows. Sales for Windows RT devices have been so bad and return rates so high that chip-makers like Nvidia have publicly voiced their disappointment while partners like Samsung have cancelled planned devices. Analyst firm IDC predicts Windows RT will achieve only a 1.9 percent marketshare in 2013 which will grow to just 2.7 percent by 2017.

What Microsoft should do is make Windows RT compatible with x86 desktop platforms and work with OEMs to lower the price of devices so they are price-competitive with Android tablets. What it will do is kill this failing platform by the end of the year.

Chromebook Pixel

Chromebooks as a category are doing very well, with the $249 Samsung Chromebook dominating Amazon?s list of best-selling laptop computers. With low prices and long battery life, Chromebooks are the 2013 answer to the netbook. However, just as consumers wouldn?t have paid $1,300 for a premium quality Eee PC in 2009, they won?t pay that much for a nicer Chromebook today.

When we reviewed the $1,299 Chromebook Pixel, we were impressed with its beautiful high-res touch screen, comfy keyboard and attractive design. However, for over $1,000 users want a complete desktop OS like Windows or Mac OS X. After its overpriced device fails to catch on with consumers, Google will put the Pixel out to pasture and stop selling it by the end of this year.

Ubuntu Phone

Firefox OS, Tizen, Ubuntu Phone: how many new operating systems does the mobile phone market need? This year, all three of these new platforms are due to make their debut, competing with iOS, Android, Windows Phone and BlackBerry 10.

The PC market has room for an infinite number of platforms, because users can install the OS of their choice on any computer, even one they built themselves. On phones, your platform is worthless if both hardware vendors and carriers, both of whom are extremely conservative, don?t support it.

Samsung is throwing its weight behind Tizen and may even use the OS instead of Android on all its smartphones at some point. Several carriers and handset makers, including Alcatel and ZTE, have already shown off working Firefox OS phones that real carriers plan to sell outside the U.S. It looks like Ubuntu Phone, despite its attractive UI and ability to run desktop apps, will be the odd man out.

ASUS Taichi and Descendants

Dual-screen laptops have a rich but checkered history, with Lenovo, Kohjinsha and Acer all briefly experimenting with them. ASUS now offers its own unique dual-screen design with the ASUS Taichi 21, a notebook that has 11.6-inch screens on both sides of its lid. While the backfacing screen doesn?t give the users any additional screen real estate, they can show presentations or movies to people sitting across from them, a boon for business. However, even with just one screen activated, the Taichi?s battery life was a weak 4 hours and 37 minutes, a time which shrank to just over 3 hours with both displays on.

For $1,600, users expect more, but they won?t get it from ASUS. The innovative company knows when to drop a concept that isn?t working and Taichi isn?t. I don?t expect to see a sequel to this Gigli-like laptop.

Motorola Droid Line

From the long-lasting RAZR Maxx HD to the compact RAZR M, Motorola?s Droid line of Android phones are among the best in the business. Unfortunately, the company only sells its best products on Verizon, dumping mid-range and low-end handsets on the other carriers. To be a real success in the smartphone business, you need to sell the same flagship product across multiple carriers like Samsung has done with its Galaxy S III.

Now that Google owns Motorola, the Android-maker expects to ?drain the pipe? of current phones in development and start focusing on creating a few high-quality devices. I expect that part of that strategy will be an end to Verizon-only products as Motorola seeks to broaden distribution and simplify its product line. If the company comes out with any more Verizon exclusives this year, they?ll be the last.

Small-Time Smart Watches

Does anyone remember the Nokia 770? How about the Pepper Pad? Both devices were slate computers that came out the year before the first iPad. However, after Apple changed the market, these half-baked early stabs at a tablet were toast.

Today, we?re on the verge of a revolution in smart watches. Apple, Samsung, LG and Google are all reportedly working on major products for release this year. Meanwhile, early players like the pricey, unstable I?m Watch and the grayscale-only Pebble have either delivered unstable performance or a mediocre set of functions. By the end of the year, most of these first-gen watches will have been swept out of the market by big-name competitors with more polished products.

HTC Zoe

HTC?s not the clear market leader in smartphones by any stretch, but it?s still trying to build support for its own proprietary short video format, which it calls Zoe. If you own an HTC One phone, you can record 3-second clips and then share them on HTC?s Zoe share site. Because Zoe is not a standard, the clips can?t be embedded in popular social media sites like Facebook or Twitter.

If you have some other brand of phone or even a different HTC handset, you can?t capture Zoes. Meanwhile, Twitter?s Vine videos, which are twice as long as Zoes, are becoming extremely popular and will likely soon extend beyond iOS to other platforms. Animated GIFs are also very popular, which is why Samsung has a special Cinema mode on the Galaxy S4 that lets you create them. I can?t imagine HTC continuing to push Zoes when its users want to create the same kind of short videos as all of their friends. short video niche.

Windows 8 Sliders

Sometimes, you have a good idea on paper that just doesn?t work in the plastic and metal world of hardware design. Since the launch of Windows 8, we?ve seen a number of hybrid systems that look like tablets but have keyboards and stands that slide out of the screen to turn them into clamshell shaped notebooks. Unfortunately, systems like the Sony VAIO Duo 11 and MSI Slider S20 offer the worst of both worlds: a thick, heavy tablet and a notebook with an uncomfortable keyboard and no wrist support. The MSI Slider S20 doesn?t even have a touchpad or pointing stick. Even worse, most of these devices cost a lot more than the combination of devices they?re meant to replace as users could buy both an iPad and a $700 notebook for the price of the $1,199 Duo 11.

While we don?t have sales numbers for sliders specifically, we know that few consumers want high-priced, uncomfortable devices. Manufacturers will catch on and, if there are still any sliders selling in the fall, this holiday season will be their last.

BracketRacket: Jim Boeheim, R.L. Stine and pizza

Welcome back to BracketRacket, your one-stop shopping place for all things NCAA.

For our final Sweet 16 edition, Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim chuckles at NFL film study, author R.L. Stine marvels at the NCAA tournament's knack for mass hypnosis, Pizza Hut plans a shockingly good deal at Wichita State, a rare travel plan for the Maryland women and the tournament's interference with educating tomorrow's leaders.

___

BOEHEIM, THE FILM CRITIC

You know how those NFL coaches bury themselves in the film room? AP Sports Writer Joseph White reports from Washington that's just not Jim Boeheim's style.

"I'm not a big proponent of scouting, film work," the Syracuse coach said before facing fellow Big East member Marquette in a regional final. "I probably watch less film than anybody in the country. We know what we need to do. Everybody in this business knows what they need to do. It's a question of if you can execute it in the game."

That much was evident in the Orange's win against top-seeded Indiana on Thursday night. The Hoosiers just couldn't solve the Syracuse zone even though they knew what was coming.

"I always laugh at football coaches," Boeheim said. "They know every play, every position, every move that these other guys are going to make because they watch 36,000 hours of tape. Their players have no clue what they're talking about. ... I always say if the football player can do one-tenth of what those coaches know, they would be geniuses, because you can't.

"It's not what the coaches know or what you know, it's what the players know and how they execute, and sometimes it looks like we didn't coach 'em at all, you know, but we do. We do try. We do coach 'em."

___

SCARY STUFF

Author R.L. Stine has spent two decades scaring children with his "Goosebumps" youth horror books. Stine, who went to Ohio State, is also fascinated with the way the NCAA tournament puts the nation in a trance every March.

"This is why the tournament is so brilliant, with all the brackets," Stine told AP Business Writer Christina Rexrode. "That's incredible mind control."

Stine ? his latest work, "How I Met My Monster," is out this week ? said he doesn't fill out a bracket and doesn't follow the sport much until the tournament arrives. But his wife, Jane, always does a bracket.

"She has very strange methods," Stine said. "Last year, she just picked schools that began with K, and she did great."

Evidently so, considering Kentucky beat Kansas to win the national title.

___

GATORS, UNDERDOGS AND (GASP!) BLUE DEVILS

Wendy Thomas is the red-headed girl featured in the name and logo for Wendy's fast food restaurants. The daughter of founder Dave Thomas is keeping a close watch on this year's round of 16.

Wendy Thomas went to Florida, but cheers for Ohio State because she lives in Columbus, Ohio. She even told Rexrode that, while she wanted the Gators to beat tournament darling Florida Gulf Coast in Friday night's South Regional, she would've been OK had the game gone the other way.

"I love underdogs," she said. "Everybody deserves a chance."

As for her late father, well, he liked one of the blue bloods.

"There was a time there ? I hate to say it ? when he did cheer a lot for Duke," she said. "But I think he did it just to make me mad."

___

PIZZA FOR EVERYONE? ONLY AFTER 3 MORE WINS

Three more wins by Wichita State, and it's time for an all-time college-student favorite: free pizza.

If the Shockers win the title, Pizza Hut officials have promised to feed the students in the original restaurant building on campus the Thursday after the final game.

The first Pizza Hut opened in 1958 in Wichita and the building was later moved to campus in 1986 for use by student groups. Spokesman Doug Terfehr said in an email Friday night that the chain will bring in a mobile kitchen to prepare and serve the pizzas, and open the restaurant building for students to sit and eat.

The chain would also offer a $9 pizza deal, matching the Shockers' NCAA seeding, for people who sign up online.

Any more last-second 3-pointers from Ohio State ? which has won two straight in dramatic fashion to meet the Shockers in the regional final ? and Wichita State students will be depressed AND hungry.

___

ALL ABOARD!

Over in the women's tournament, AP Basketball Writer Doug Feinberg reports, the Maryland women took a different route to get to Bridgeport, Conn., for Saturday's regional semifinal against Connecticut.

The Terrapins couldn't fly since Maryland is within 350 miles of the site, so they took the train.

"We felt like it would be a tremendous experience for a lot of our players," Maryland coach Brenda Frese said. "I asked them and over three-quarters of them had never taken the train. To give them that experience through basketball was a phenomenal opportunity and one we really enjoyed together."

The Terps were able to spread out and held study hall during the 4-hour trip.

"The train ride was very different," Terps senior Tianna Hawkins said. "I'm not really used to all the stops and people coming and going. When I was younger I traveled a lot, but we flew."

The Terrapins will bus back to Maryland. They had sent a bus to their hotel with their gear and luggage.

___

A TOURNAMENT SLOWDOWN

The Flint Journal reported this week that a Michigan school district recently had to block access to college basketball games over its computer network.

The reason? People watching tournament games online last week slowed the Genesee Intermediate School District network so much that it prevented students from viewing online material at school.

Perhaps not coincidentally, it happened the same day Michigan and Michigan State opened tournament play ? though only Michigan State played during school hours.

___

STAT OF THE DAY

Indiana is the latest top-ranked team from the preseason to fall short of the Final Four.

The Hoosiers' loss to Syracuse in the round of 16 marked the fourth straight year and ninth time in 15 years that the No. 1 in the AP preseason poll didn't make it to the tournament's final weekend, according to STATS.

Only three preseason No. 1s ? Connecticut in 2004, Florida in 2007 and North Carolina in 2009 ? have gone on to win the national championship since 1999.

Hospitality Is Undergoing Change- Becoming More Specialized

With hospitality becoming more specialized in catering to their guests, you have enough options to choose from. Look for suitable conference halls, banquets or convention halls as per the purpose. Stay ahead!

Business hotels are in fashion these days. Gone is the time when a same room or hall could cater to different requirements. Now, everybody looks for the specialization, so is the hospitality. There are different categories of rooms available for different purposes. These hotels provide well equipped conference halls to make the business meet a success. Also, you needn't worry about net connection, conferencing facilities and all. These things are duly taken care by the staff leaving the entire burden off your shoulders.

Not only business, there are different rooms available for marriages, B'day parties and other such occasions. If you are residing in Gurgaon, you are fortunate enough to have a plethora of options!

Bed and breakfast, Inns etc. all provide a wide range of facilities to their clients. There are hotels with outstanding convention halls in Gurgaon to cater to your specific needs. For marriages, the city has gardens and boasts of outstanding Banquet halls as well. Look for a rich garden if the marriage is in night. These gardens provide excellent ambience, pleasing decoration and good space to the guests.

However, opting for banquet halls is better if the gathering is limited or the function is in day time. With proper lightings, these halls impart the look of a night- marriage only. These are reasonable compared to gardens, so prove a good option for those wishing to cut down a bit.
Hotels are generally classified according to the facilities they offer to the guests and the condition of living they provide. Usually hotels with a good rating and state-of-the-art facilities are considered as luxury hotels. They are usually 5 start hotels and there is no dearth in the city. There are many reputed names available if you are looking for one. These hotels are the perfect places for big companies to organize their corporate meetings, seminars and stay of their clients.

Another categorization is 3 to 4 stars; they also offer bed and breakfast and sometimes considered to be among budget hotels. These hotels offer banquet & convention Gurgaon. Except for the world famous ambience that the luxury hotels provide, these hotels are similar and provide good services.

Cheap hotels are an option for people coming here for some work or interview purpose for a day. Even if your reason for the visit is short you can choose the cheap hotels. Some of these hotels might not provide eating facilities and the lodging might be a little difficult too. But these hotels serve to be a boon to people who come here with a strict budget or does not have too much of money to afford a living. For shorter trips, opting for Bed& Breakfast would be a wise decision though as you will be provided with complimentary breakfast.

HIV, hepatitis tests urged for 7,000 Oklahoma dental patients

By Steve Olafson

OKLAHOMA CITY (Reuters) - A Tulsa, Oklahoma, health center on Saturday began drawing blood samples from patients who may have been exposed to viruses at an oral surgery dental clinic that is under investigation.

As many as 7,000 of Dr. W. Scott Harrington's patients are being notified by letter that health officials recommend they be tested for hepatitis and HIV.

The investigation began when one of Harrington's patients tested positive for HIV and Hepatitis C. But a subsequent blood test showed the patient tested positive only for Hepatitis C, said Tulsa health department officials in a press release on Saturday.

Even so, a complaint filed by the Oklahoma Dental Board cites Harrington for an array of safety and health violations that created contamination risks for his patients. He is scheduled to appear before a dental board hearing on April 19 and has voluntarily closed his practice and surrendered his license.

Harrington's patients are being offered free blood screening on a walk-in basis at the North Regional Health and Wellness Center in Tulsa.

A hot line has also been established to answer questions and more than 400 people have called it so far, officials said.

Teachers' gestures boost math learning

Mar. 29, 2013 ? Students perform better when their instructors use hand gestures -- a simple teaching tool that could yield benefits in higher-level math such as algebra.

A study published in Child Development, the top-ranked educational psychology journal, provides some of the strongest evidence yet that gesturing may have a unique effect on learning. Teachers in the United States tend to use gestures less than teachers in other countries.

"Gesturing can be a very beneficial tool that is completely free and easily employed in classrooms," said Kimberly Fenn, study co-author and assistant professor of psychology at Michigan State University. "And I think it can have long-lasting effects."

Fenn and Ryan Duffy of MSU and Susan Cook of the University of Iowa conducted an experiment with 184 second-, third- and fourth-graders in Michigan elementary classrooms.

Half ofthe students were shown videos of an instructor teaching math problems using only speech. The others were shown videos of the instructor teaching the same problems using both speech and gestures.

The problem involved mathematical equivalence (i.e., 4+5+7=__+7), which is known to be critical to later algebraic learning. In the speech-only videos, the instructor simply explains the problem. In the other videos, the instructor uses two hand gestures while speaking, using different hands to refer to the two sides of the equation.

Students who learned from the gesture videos performed better on a test given immediately afterward than those who learned from the speech-only video.

Another test was given 24 hours later, and the gesture students actually showed improvement in their performance while the speech-only students did not.

While previous research has shown the benefits of gestures in a one-on-one tutoring-style environment, the new study is the first to test the role of gestures in equivalence learning in a regular classroom.

The study also is the first to show that gestures can help students transfer learning to new contexts -- such as transferring the knowledge learned in an addition-based equation to a multiplication-based equation.

Fenn noted that U.S. students lag behind those in many other Western countries in math and have a particularly hard time mastering equivalence problems in early grades.

"So if we can help them grasp this foundational knowledge earlier," she said, "it will help them as they learn algebra and higher levels of mathematics."

Meteor Strike: The Complete Story of Russia's Cosmic Fireball

Thanks to the crazy prevalence of dash-cams in Russia, we got an amazing, multi-viewpoint look at last month's monster meteor strike just hours after it happened. But there's more to see than just the flashes in the sky. PBS's Nova dug in deep to figure out the details of the incident, and the disaster it could have been. The disaster it might be next time if we don't keep a close watch on the skies. More »

Shroud of Turin goes on display amid new research

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? The Shroud of Turin has gone on display for a special TV appearance amid new research purporting to date the linen some say was Jesus' burial cloth to around the time of his death.

Pope Francis sent a special video message to the event in Turin's cathedral, which coincided with Holy Saturday, when Catholics mark the period between Christ's crucifixion on Good Friday and his resurrection on Easter Sunday.

The Vatican has tiptoed around just what the cloth is, calling it a powerful symbol of Christ's suffering while making no claim to its authenticity.

Francis toed that line Saturday, calling the cloth an "icon" ? not a relic.

Many experts stand by carbon-dating of scraps of the cloth that date it to the 13th or 14th century.

Alert cleared at Eiffel Tower after bomb threat

Thomas Coex / AFP - Getty Images

French police stand guard near the Eiffel Tower in Paris on March 30, 2013. The Eiffel Tower was evacuated after an anonymous phone call announced an attack, said a police source. The perimeter of the monument was secured and about 1,400 people were evacuated shortly before 9 p.m.

By Nancy Ing and Becky Bratu, NBC News

Police evacuated about 1,400 tourists and staffers at the Eiffel Tower for two hours after an anonymous individual called in a bomb threat Saturday, but people were later allowed to return.

French media reported police had lifted the security alert around 10 p.m. local time, saying the threat appeared to be a hoax. The public was allowed to return once investigators completed the search for suspicious devices.

The call received at 7 p.m. local time warned of a possible attack at 9:30 p.m. local time.

Investigators used sniffer dogs to search the Eiffel Tower for any explosive devices.

French police have received similar calls in the past and have always evacuated the famous tourist attraction as a precaution. The tower was evacuated at least once last year and twice in 2011, according to The Associated Press.

News website Le Parisien reported that police said the threat was called in from a telephone booth in a Paris suburb.

Three Guys in Scuba Suits Can Do More Damage to the Web Than You Think

Slowdowns in Internet traffic in the Middle East and South Asia earlier this week were likely the work of hackers. Hackers in the traditional sense: The Egyptian Navy caught three men hacking into an undersea cable. And it's a bigger problem than it seems.

RELATED: The Egyptian Outrage Peddler Who Sent an Anti-Islam YouTube Clip Viral

According to the Associated Press, the Egyptian Navy announced the arrest on its official Facebook page yesterday. The AP translates the Navy's statement:

The cable that was damaged was the SMW-4, which its website (it has a website) indicates travels from Marseilles in the south of France to Singapore. TeleGeography's Submarine Cable Map shows the route the cable takes.

RELATED: So, He's Actually the Sandman?

It's one of a number of cables that come inland at Alexandria near the historic Citadel of Qaitbay, below, as documented in Neal Stephenson's December 1996 overview of cable networks for Wired. Cut the SMW-4 there, and you have an effect on countries in three continents.

RELATED: Occupy Wall Street Calls Off Its Egyptian Expedition

While cables are regularly damaged by fishermen or boat anchors, lines have also been intentionally cut a number of times before. In 2007, as a report published by the US Naval Institute indicates, Vietnamese pirates stole parts of an cable near that country. In February 2008, outages on five separate underseas cables were attributed to sabotage by a UN official.

The USNI report also suggests that the offshore cables could be a tempting target for terrorists ? and the damage could be significant. Even small delays in internet transmissions can, for example, have serious economic repercussions. One of the key benefits of a new line run last year between London and New York was that it would reduce transmission speeds from 64.8 milliseconds to 59.6. For people making electronic trades, that's a massive improvement. More serious damage, an outage that completely cripples communications, offers a much broader and obvious set of problems.

Not that there's much that can be done. It's not clear how Egypt caught the saboteurs, although it appears they were operating fairly close to the coast. There are thousands of miles of accessible, unprotected cable lying on the ocean floor, running onto lightly protected beaches around the world. All of the effort and consideration put into online security means little when three guys in scuba suits can severely damage communications between nearly a dozen countries.

Man-size jellyfish robot could ply the high seas

Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech graduate students test Cyro, a man-size jellyfish robot, as it moves up and down underwater.

By Jeanna Bryner
LiveScience

A giant, slimy, tentacled robot modeled after one of the world's largest jellyfish could be a precursor to self-powered, autonomous robots that monitor the seas, map the seafloor and even reveal secrets of marine life, engineers say.

Dubbed Cyro, the newly unveiled robotic jellyfish is a scaled-up version of another mechanical swimmer, this one the size of a human hand, called RoboJelly that was developed by the same team of researchers at Virginia Tech College of Engineering.

At 5-foot-7 (1.7 meters) and weighing 170 pounds (77 kilograms), Cyro is the jelly equivalent of an average human guy.

Jellyfish make great models for self-powered and autonomous bots partly because of their relatively low metabolic rate, meaning they can move through the sea on little energy. They also come in various sizes and inhabit a range of aquatic habitats from shallow coastal areas to the deep-sea, meaning engineers have plenty to work with when looking for a mimic for particular uses.

Cyro is modeled after Cyanea capillata, or the lion's mane jellyfish, whose bell stretches about 5 to 6 feet (1.5 to 1.8 m) across, with some observations suggesting the bell can reach 9 feet (2.7 m) across. The robot model also has a central "bell," this one holding the creature's electronic guts, with a thick layer of squishy silicone meant to mimic jellyfish skin covering the entire creature, Alex Villanueva, a mechanical engineering graduate student at Virginia Tech, told LiveScience. [Video ? See Cyro the Robotic Jellyfish in Action]

The robot's arms, which are powered and controlled by the central electronics, move radially from an outward position in toward the center. That radial "musculature" triggers the pulsing motions of the artificial mesoglea, or the gelatinous substance that makes up the jellyfish's skin.

The research team tested the jellybot in Virginia Tech's diving well, a 14-feet-deep (4.3 meters) swimming pool, where Cyro showed off its vertical know-how, moving from 8 feet deep (2.4 m) to the surface with just five complete pulsing motions, said researcher Kenneth Marut, a graduate student in mechanical engineering at Virginia Tech, during an interview.

Cyro is still in the prototype stages, and so years away from real deployment in the seas, the researchers said. The team, which also includes graduate student Tyler Michael, is working on horizontal movements, as Cyro currently can move only in the up-down direction.

"We hope to improve on this robot and reduce power consumption and improve swimming performance as well as better mimic the morphology of the natural jellyfish," Villanueva said. The team also hopes to learn about the real McCoy.

"Our hopes for Cyro's future is that it will help understand how the propulsion mechanism of such animal scales with size," Villanueva said.

Both Cyro and its smaller cousin RoboJelly came out of a $5 million, multi-university project funded by the U.S. Naval Undersea Warfare Center and the Office of Naval Research. The engineering team is led by Virginia Tech mechanical engineering professor Shashank Priya.

GameStop says demand hit as customers await new console launches

(Reuters) - GameStop Corp, the world's largest retailer of video game products, warned of weak sales this year, as customers delay purchases ahead of the launch of next-generation gaming consoles.

Comparable store sales are likely to fall by between 5.5 percent and 8 percent in the current quarter, the company warned.

Full-year sales are forecast to remain flat or fall by up to 8 percent, implying a revenue of between $8.18 billion and $8.89 billion. Analysts expect $8.86 billion on average, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

GameStop's full-year earnings forecast also lagged analysts' estimates by a sizeable margin. It sees full-year earnings at $2.75-$3.15 per share, while analysts had estimated $3.40 per share.

The video game industry is anticipating a strong finish to 2013 with the release of Grand Theft Auto V and the launch of at least one next-generation console by the holidays.

As a result, GameStop expects the first half of the year to be challenging as consumers postpone purchases leading up to the fourth quarter console launch.

Sony Corp said last month it would launch its next-generation PlayStation this year, its first video game console in seven years. Microsoft Corp is also expected to unveil the successor to its Xbox 360 later this summer.

Sales of traditional video game products such as consoles have been pressured globally by the rising popularity of online games as enthusiasts spend more time on tablets and phones.

U.S. sales of videogame hardware and software fell 25 percent in February, following a month-over-month downward trend that has continued since last year, according to a report by market research firm NPD.

Games software sales were down 27 percent during the same month, the report added.

GameStop has weathered the trend by focusing on selling new and used games to console owners and expanding its digital and mobile offerings, including the sale of iOS and Android devices in some stores.

The company said total revenue fell marginally in the fourth quarter to $3.56 billion.

Net income rose $261.1 million, or $2.15 per share, from $174.7 million, or $1.27 cents per share a year earlier.

Adjusted for the deferral of digital revenue and other items, the company's earnings were $262.3 million, or $2.16 per share.

Analysts on average expected earnings of $2.09 per share on revenue of $3.45 billion for the fourth quarter.

In January, GameStop cut its same-store sales forecast for the fourth quarter after customer traffic shrank over the holiday season.

The company's shares were trading up 2 percent at $26.92 in early morning trade on the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday.

Eggs-treme: Christie's auctions super-sized egg

LONDON (AP) ? It's a foot long, nearly nine inches in diameter, and would once have made a really, really, big omelet.

A London auction house is hoping buyers will be scrambling to take a crack at this natural wonder, a massive fossilized egg laid long ago on the island of Madagascar by a now-extinct elephant bird.

Christie's said Wednesday that the oversized ovum ? laid sometime before elephant birds were wiped out several hundred years ago ? is expected to sell for up to 30,000 pounds (roughly $45,000).

Flightless, fruit-gobbling elephant birds resembled giant ostriches and could grow to be 11 feet high (3.4 meters). Christie's says their eggs are 100 times the size of an average chicken's.

The egg is being sold during a travel and science sale on April 24.

Harry Potter actor Richard Griffiths dies after surgery

LONDON (Reuters) - British actor Richard Griffiths, best known for his roles in 'Withnail and I' and the Harry Potter films, has died at the age of 65 after complications following heart surgery, his agent said on Friday.

Griffiths spent almost four decades in radio, film, on television and on stage, and received some of his industry's top awards for his role in Alan Bennett's play "The History Boys".

The portly actor filled the screen as the lascivious Uncle Monty in the cult 1987 film 'Withnail and I'.

But younger fans will remember him for his portrayal of a much crueler avuncular figure - Harry Potter's red-faced and bullying uncle Vernon Dursley.

Daniel Radcliffe, who played the boy wizard and performed with Griffiths in the stage play "Equus", said the veteran performer had encouraged and coached him and helped him get over his nerves.

"Richard was by my side during two of the most important moments of my career ... any room he walked into was made twice as funny and twice as clever just by his presence. I am proud to say I knew him," Radcliffe said in a statement.

Griffiths' agent, Simon Beresford, described him as "a remarkable man and one of our greatest and best-loved actors". He said Griffiths died in hospital on Thursday.

The actor was born in Thornaby-on-Tees in Yorkshire, northern England, the son of a steelworker. Both his parents were deaf and he learned sign language to communicate with them.

After studying drama in Manchester, he worked in radio and theatre, building a reputation as a Shakespearean clown.

He reprised his role as teacher Hector in a film of "The History Boys" in 2006. One of his best known roles on television was a cookery-loving detective in "Pie in the Sky".

On stage, he was known for his intolerance of mobile phones ringing during performances, and halted plays several times to complain and even eject offending audience members.

Nicholas Hytner, director of Britain's National Theatre, said Griffiths' unexpected death would devastate his "army of friends".

"Richard Griffiths wasn't only one of the most loved and recognizable British actors - he was also one of the very greatest," Hytner said in a statement.

Griffiths was given an OBE in 2008 and is survived by his wife Heather.

The Kill Zone: Know Your Audience

This past weekend, I had the privilege of speaking to the Southwest Florida Romance Writers in Estero, Florida. Up to 25 members were present when I spoke about Social Networking for Writers and passed around my eight-page handout. We could have discussed this topic for a lot longer than the allotted hour, but our time ended and I left for home.

P1020304 (800x600)???
P1020303 (800x600)

On the drive back to the east coast, I reflected on how a speaker really has to gear her talk to the audience. Speaking to a bunch of writers is a lot different than giving a talk to a roomful of fans. Readers in general are eager to hear how you got published, where you get your ideas, what you researched for your story, and if you make a living at what you do. Don?t ask me why, but that question always arises. Would you ask a lecturer how much money he makes?

You?re expected to be witty and entertaining and to use anecdotes in your talk. I like to educate the public on the realities of the publishing business, so I?ll talk about the impact of the digital era, choices for writers today, and what readers can do to help authors in terms of customer reviews, Liking our pages, sharing our posts, etc. Lay persons find this information to be fascinating. Sure, I?ll talk about my books but mainly as an overview about my series and some of my research experiences. I don?t believe in doing readings or a book review on a specific title. There?s nothing more boring, IMHO, as an author?s droning voice as he reads from his own work. It?s more exciting to talk off the cuff about the publishing world and what fuels my stories.

In contrast, when speaking to fellow writers, I aim to teach. I want to get points across that they can take home and use in their own work. Motivational talks uplift and inspire writers to keep plowing ahead despite the setbacks that we all experience in this career. I?d rather give practical tips, how-to details, and specific instructions. Handouts accompany all of my workshops. This is not necessarily the case if I?m on a panel, however. Then it?s much harder to get across a lot of information because you?re sharing the time and stage. It?s good to come prepared with a few pointers regardless, and handouts are still appreciated, but having one hour to myself is best for in-depth instruction.

I?ve attended panels at writers conferences where the authors prattle on about their work, and attendees leave the room having been entertained but learning nothing new. I don?t care to attend those types of sessions myself. I?d rather go to a workshop where I can gain new insights or tips on a specific aspect of writing or marketing. Anybody can talk about himself. How many can teach in a meaningful, clear manner? Those who can?t teach will do very well speaking on panels at fan conventions, libraries and community groups.

Where am I going with this? If you have a speaking engagement coming up, consider your audience. If it?s a bunch of fans/readers, talk about your books, the publishing world, where you get your ideas, the writing process. If it?s a group of writers, target your material so they can take away something worthwhile.

If you?re a reader, what do you like to hear when you go to see an author? If you?re a writer, do you differentiate how you approach each audience?

Five Favorite Films with Derek Cianfrance

Derek Cianfrance's 2010 drama Blue Valentine earned strong reviews and confirmed stars Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling as among the best actors of their generation. For his follow-up, the filmmaker has again enlisted Gosling, together with Bradley Cooper and Eva Mendes, as part of an ambitious, three-part drama on the legacy of troubled fathers and sons. It's called The Place Beyond the Pines, and it opens in select theaters across the country this week. Here, we talk with Cianfrance about his favorite movies.

GoodFellas
(Martin Scorsese, 1990; 97% Tomatometer)

First one I'd say is GoodFellas. When I was a teenager I slept underneath a picture of Martin Scorsese. I think GoodFellas is just a perfect film. From an efficiency of storytelling standpoint, from an entertainment standpoint, from a performance standpoint, from a use of music standpoint, from a cinematography and editing standpoint -- to me it's just a perfect movie. That's a movie I saw when I was 16 years old, when I watched it in a theater 30 times. A perfect movie.

You must have been happy to have Ray Liotta in The Place Beyond the Pines.

I was. When I first met with my co-writer, Ben Coccio, I found out that his favorite movie was GoodFellas, too -- so we said, "Hey, why don't we write a movie together and let's write a role for Ray Liotta in it." And then five years later there I was sitting in an audition room with Ray Liotta -- it was like, you know, dreams really do come true.

Did you tell him how many times you saw his movie?

Yeah. And he said, "Oh, I only saw it once." [Laughs] Someday, I think they're gonna carve his face into a mountaintop.

Next choice I'd say would be The Gospel According to St. Matthew, by Pasolini. I saw that movie for the first time when I was 23 years old. I'd gone to church every Sunday and catechism every week for my whole childhood, but I never paid attention; I was always daydreaming in church -- and all of a sudden I went to go see this movie, and I knew everything in the movie. I guess all of my Catholic upbringing I had absorbed through some sort of osmosis. Here was this movie which was this Biblical story which was told so beautifully: the cinema was so simple and so beautiful. He had, you know, Odetta playing "Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child" as the three wise men found Mary and Joseph and baby Jesus. It was, you know... I started sweating while I was watching the movie. The whole left side of my body went numb while I was watching, and I was sure that I was having a heart attack. It was all that I could do -- you know, I didn't want to because it was the greatest movie I'd ever seen -- but it was all I could do to crawl out of the movie theater and knock on the projectionist's door and ask him if I could call my girlfriend. I called my girlfriend and told her I thought I was dying, 'cause I was seeing the greatest movie I'd ever seen, and she showed up. I remember it had been snowing in Colorado and she had all this dirty snow on the roof of her car and I was eating all this dirty snow because my mouth was just parched. And I remember being in the emergency room and thinking that when the doctor walks through, if he looked like Jesus from The Gospel According to St. Matthew, I knew that meant I was dead. Fortunately the guy didn't look anything like Jesus.

Gimme Shelter (Albert Maysles, David Maysles, Charlotte Zwerin, 1970; 100% Tomatometer)

Another one of my five favorite films would be Gimme Shelter, by the Maysles brothers. I spent many years making documentary films between my first film and my second film, Blue Valentine, and I learned to really embrace, and be humbled by life, and by telling a story where you're telling someone else's story. And there's something about the Maysles brothers, and especially that movie, where they were able to witness these moments. Especially with Gimme Shelter, you know, these moments of American history -- this concert at Altamont that turned into kind of the bad trip of Woodstock. And I love how they frame it with the band, the Stones, watching the footage, watching their memories; this document, this witness to this incredible time in American life -- and this crime, this real crime in America. Also, for nothing else than the moment where Mick Jagger has to watch Tina Turner. Again, like watching the Scorsese movie -- and the Pasolini movie -- their use of music, you know, is to watch a real rock and roll movie in the theater, with that sound. It's great.

Contempt
(Jean-Luc Godard, 1963; 93% Tomatometer)

Next one would be Contempt by Godard. The first time I ever saw it, on a VHS copy 25 years ago, I thought it was the worst movie I'd ever seen. Actually, every Godard film I've ever seen I've hated the first time. But it got re-released a number of years back and I was in New York and saw it at the Film Forum, and I felt like I was seeing Halley's Comet, you know -- I couldn't believe how wrong I was; how much I'd despised this film the first time I saw it and how much my second viewing was completely the polar opposite reaction. I think the performances, from Bardot and Piccoli to Jack Palance, to, you know, Cotard's photography and Delerue's amazing repetitive score... to me it's one of those Godard movies where it's a perfect balance between heart and mind, you know? Oftentimes his films are extremely heavy, but this film was not only heavy -- you could forever gaze into it on repeated viewings, as it appeals to your intelligence -- but it also appealed to your soul. It was a huge, huge inspiration for Blue Valentine, especially the middle section of Contempt, where it feels like this 45-minute sequence where this couple is in their apartment.

The last film I would say -- and I could pick many of his films, but I will choose Woman Under the Influence, by Cassavetes. I could also have said Faces, or I could have said The Killing of a Chinese Bookie, or Husbands, or Minnie and Moskowitz, or I could have said Love Streams, but -- today it will be Woman Under the Influence. I love the structure of it; its two-part structure -- it really feels like a film in two movements. Arguably the two greatest performances of all time, between Peter Falk and Gena Rowlands. You know, it's a home movie, and everything I've been trying to make are home movies -- movies that take place inside the house and the family. I love the spirit of Cassavetes' films, in that he's casting his wife and his best friend in the roles, and his mother and her mother are in it, and the kids. To me it's a movie that changes, too, throughtout the course of my life. I know the movie isn't changing, I'm changing; but when I watch it the movie seems to shape-shift. I remember the first time I ever saw it I thought she was crazy; I remember on the 50th time I watched it I thought she was the only sane person in the movie and everyone else was crazy. I love that about movies that are made with a certain openness -- that the audience can kind of participate in the imagination of the characters, you know; of their lives and of the story.

The Place Beyond the Pines is in select theaters this week.

South Africa's Mandela "responding positively" to treatment

By Ed Stoddard

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Former South African President Nelson Mandela is "responding positively" to treatment for a recurring lung infection after being admitted to hospital overnight, the government said on Thursday.

"He remains under treatment and observation in hospital," it added in a statement, without giving further details about the health of the 94-year-old anti-apartheid leader.

Mandela, who became South Africa's first black president in 1994, has been mostly absent from the political scene for the past decade, but remains an enduring and beloved symbol of the struggle against racism.

He is renowned at home and abroad for spending 27 years in prison fighting the last bastion of white rule in Africa and then promoting the cause of racial reconciliation.

"Black Americans look up to him because he fought oppression and his bravery is something that doesn't happen often," said Yau Williams, an American tourist, as he walked through Johannesburg's financial district of Sandton.

Mandela has been frail and in poor health for several years.

"He will come out fine, let's just have faith in God," said Samson Ndlovu, speaking in Zulu as he walked out of a Johannesburg taxi rank.

Mandela was in hospital briefly earlier this month for a check-up, and spent nearly three weeks in hospital in December with a lung infection and after surgery to remove gallstones.

That was his longest stay in hospital since his release from prison in 1990 after serving almost three decades for conspiring to overthrow the white-minority apartheid government.

Mandela has a history of lung problems dating back to when he contracted tuberculosis as a political prisoner.

As he has receded from public life, critics say his ruling African National Congress (ANC) has lost the moral compass he bequeathed it when he stepped down as president in 1999.

Under such leaders as Mandela, Walter Sisulu and Oliver Tambo, the ANC gained wide international respect as it battled white rule. Once the yoke of apartheid was thrown off, it began ruling South Africa in a blaze of goodwill from world leaders who viewed it as a beacon for a troubled continent and world.

Almost two decades later, this image has dimmed as ANC leaders have been accused of indulging in the spoils of office, squandering mineral resources and engaging in power struggles.

Mandela spent much of last year in Qunu, his ancestral village in the poor Eastern Cape province. But since his release from hospital in December he has been at his home in an affluent Johannesburg suburb, closer to sophisticated medical facilities.

1 of FBI's most wanted surrenders

DENVER (AP) ? One of the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives has voluntarily returned from El Salvador to Colorado to face a first-degree murder charge in a 2011 slaying, the FBI said Wednesday.

Edwin Ernesto Rivera Gracias landed in Centennial, Colo., with FBI agents Wednesday afternoon, less than two weeks after being added to the Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list.

The surrender of Rivera Gracias, a citizen of El Salvador, came after the FBI announced a $100,000 reward for information leading to his arrest. The FBI isn't releasing further details related to the reward.

Rivera Gracias was wanted in Jefferson County in the slaying of Richard Limon, 69, whose body was found near a guardrail on Lookout Mountain in 2011. He had been stabbed multiple times.

An affidavit filed in federal court alleges Rivera Gracias had talked about killing Limon because of allegations that Limon molested Rivera Gracias' girlfriend. The girlfriend was the daughter of Limon's wife.

Limon's wife and another man pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the case and have been sentenced to prison. Rivera Gracias' girlfriend pleaded guilty to being an accessory to commit murder.

"This outcome provides assurance for victims and prosecutors throughout the United States that those who commit egregious crimes will be pursued around the globe," said Steve Olson, FBI Denver acting special agent in charge, in a written statement.

The Best Methods of Internet Business Development

The Best Methods of Internet Business Development

A lot has happened over the past few years in the field of SEO, most importantly when it comes to knowing what keywords work and which ones don't. With SEO reporting tools seeming to become more sophisticated on a regular basis, the entire process of going online and making your business work better would at first appear to be a very intricate process. You might even confuse the entire process of furthering your business with aligning your operation to a particular algorithm. Fortunately, this is not entirely the case.

?

To learn more about how SEO and developing your business are not the same thing, read this.

?

The keywords do not necessarily need to control the content. While a lot of companies see keywords as the bread and butter of everything they do online, this is a lot like suggesting that the wagon is more important than the cargo it carries. While the cargo itself cannot move, the wagon is simply the delivery vehicle by which the cargo arrives at its intended destination. While SEO ranking software is indeed useful for a large number of applications related to developing your business online, it is by far not the most important aspect of running your business successfully in the online world.

?

Simply put, your business depends firs and foremost on making sure that you understand your customers and how they think. Naturally, this is going to inform almost the entirety of your marketing process, and that does include the search engine front. However, assuming that the search engines are the only methods by which your future customers are going to find you is a fallacy that far too many business owners have partaken in.

?

Internet business development is about a lot of things, and only one of those things is picking keywords. By far the most important aspect of making sure the right people find out about and begin to grow their trust in your business comes down to understanding who these people are and what they want. Once you have a solid grasp on the desires these people have and who they actually are, you can begin to construct a much larger and more robust understanding of what they are going to be looking for and how they are going to be searching for it. There are a lot of reasons why the search engines are not necessarily your only bet. In some cases they are not even your best bet.

?

For example, Pinterest is a major online resource for finding a large number of companies and the products they produce. It is not a traditional search engine, and the traditional methods of SEO do not apply to it. So if your entire strategy revolved around the use of keywords, Pinterest's millions of regular site users would most likely not be availed to your business. Considering that roughly 80% of Pinterest users are female, this could be a dramatic loss to you depending on what you offer. On the other hand, it may be a very slight loss that would not even have been worth pursuing in the first place.

?

To learn some more about marketing online, read this.

?

The nature of the online world is that you cannot directly see the people who may be buying from you. Because of this, you have to use facts and sometimes take some chances with educated guesses. While guessing is typically not a great strategy, in some cases you need to take a chance and grow through the possibility of making an error. The best way to grow your business is to proceed in spite of any potential for intermittent failures.
