KNOCKED OUT: Heather Watson has been defeated in Washington (PA)
BRITISH NUMBER two Heather Watson was knocked out of the Citi Open in Washington by French opponent Alize Cornet.
The 21-year-old was knocked out in straight sets 6-4 6-4 by the number four seed in just under 97 minutes.
Watson had her serve broken once in each set by Cornet as the 23-year-old marked off what was a superb display on her first match point.
The British player came into the game placed 45 places lower than her opponent at 76 in the world.
It was Watson?s first major tournament since Wimbledon and her first hard court competition in almost five months.
The world number 76 will be training with American Chip Brooks in Washington after ending her time with coach Mauricio Hadad.
Despite going out in the singles competition, Watson was still participate in doubles action with Anna Tatishvili of Georgia.
Meanwhile, top seed Angelique Kerber dispatched of Melanie Oudin 7-5, 6-0.
Ekaterina Makarova, Alize Cornet, Sorana Cirstea, Magdalena Rybarikova and Monica Niculescu went through, while Olga Puchkova was suspended from her match against Paula Ormaechea after hitting a line judge in the knee with a ball after losing a point.
She trailed 3-6 6-3 4-1 at the time.
