Men Need X Chromosome To Make More Men (And Women)

60-Second Science

Genomic analysis of the human X chromosome shows that it evolved to have responsibilities in sperm production. Sophie Bushwick reports.

More 60-Second Science

It takes a Y chromosome to make a man. But that doesn't mean its counterpart, the X chromosome, plays no part. In fact, it has a big role in making sperm.

To study X evolution, researchers first sequenced the human chromosome more accurately than ever before. Then they compared the code to that of a mammal whose evolutionary lineage split from ours about 80 million years ago: the mouse.

It turns out that humans and mice share 95 percent of their X genes. This finding was no surprise. In the 1960s, biologist Susumu Ohno suggested the X chromosome would evolve slowly, and thus remain similar in most mammalian species. But some things did change over evolutionary time. Or rather, 144 things.

One-hundred-forty-four human X chromosome genes had no counterparts in mice. And these genes seemed to be constantly developing. Many of the genes remained dormant in females, only becoming active in tissues involved in sperm production. The study is in the journal Nature Genetics. [Jacob L. Mueller et al, Independent specialization of the human and mouse X chromosomes for the male germ line]

Clearly, the X chromosome Xceeds its feminine responsibilities. Which is Xcellent news for male fertility.

Therapy may curb kidney deterioration in patients with rare disorder

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Researchers have overcome a biological hurdle to find improved treatments for patients with methylmalonic acidemia. Using genetically engineered mice created for their studies, the team identified a set of biomarkers of kidney damage -- a hallmark of the disorder -- and demonstrated that antioxidant therapy protected kidney function in the mice.

Review of Ojino Sushi from 27 July 2013

First time I have ordered from Ojino Sushi. They messed up my order and delivery came two hours and 15 minutes later when they promised it was going to be delivered before 8pm. Was asked to text them my details as they were too busy to write down my details over the phone. Had to call several times about my order. Be prepared for them to put the phone down on you.?No apology given for the poor service or any compensation. Food came and was not fresh and looked absolutely disgusting, presentation was awful. Customer service was appalling, spoke to the manager Roy and clearly they do not know how to run a business. Will not be ordering from them ever again.

97% Blackfish

All Critics (60) | Top Critics (20) | Fresh (58) | Rotten (2)

It not only delivers astonishing, suspenseful footage that makes it a legitimate thriller, but also serves up thoughtful meditations about using wild animals for our own entertainment.

It's hard to imagine anyone coming out of this movie and not swearing off the next vacation trip to Orlando, San Antonio or San Diego.

Unfortunately, this feels like a ten-minute news segment blown up to theatrical proportions.

While Cowperthwaite's film opens with a simple question about the behavior of a single killer whale, it ends up mounting a persuasive ethical argument against keeping orcas in captivity.

"Blackfish" is no trumped up horror story fueled by Hollywood brand names and special effects. In this riveting documentary directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, all of the creatures are real, and all seem entitled to the serious chip on their shoulders.

The film may be depressing. But even with a terrible, watery musical score, it's also good.

Some of the archive footage is exceedingly harrowing, but the case against commercially condoned cruelty is made without sensationalism, and few will be able to watch this without a growing sense of outrage.

Cruelty begets cruelty and whales don't belong in the circus.

It is never less than gripping, and devastatingly undermines the notion of performing whales as wholesome family entertainment.

Damning and disturbing viewing.

It's a strong piece of video journalism in which images and the interviews deliver the information, and we reach our own conclusions.

A horrifying, heartbreaking eye-opener about human inhumanity to other intelligent and emotional beings who share our planet.

As horribly gripping as a serial-killer thriller, though the real villain is not the ostensible culprit, but its human captors.

An acclaimed and chastening documentary about what happens to human beings - injury, mutilation, death - when they pen orcas in sea parks.

Important, informative, imperfect.

A chilling exploration of the life of an orca in captivity, this documentary forces us to look at zoos and especially aquarium shows in a completely new light.

To analyze real-life tragedy we must understand it so we can prevent it, Cowperthwaite justly argues. Not so we can sigh and hope it doesn't happen again.

Behavioural experts describe the orca brain's advanced capacity for emotion, while former trainers reveal the stories spun by SeaWorld to convince its visitors that the whales enjoy their work.

Superbly directed, powerfully emotional documentary that presents a convincing case against keeping orca whales in captivity and is liable to induce righteous anger at the behaviour of a certain marine park.

Avoiding sensationalism it unearths the events in Tilikum's life with a journalistic rigour, expanding the story wider to reveal the dangers of keeping whales in captivity.

Obama economic tour attracts low expectations

(AP Photo/Charlie Riedel)

(AP) ? It's hard to find anyone who thinks President Barack Obama's series of heavily promoted economic speeches will be the flash point that unclogs the system in Washington ? including the president.

A day after he kicked off the tour in Illinois and Missouri, Obama was traveling Thursday to a seaport in Jacksonville, Fla., to yet again deride the wide gulf between his vision for a new American prosperity driven by a burgeoning middle class and the intense gridlock snarling up Congress.

"With an endless parade of distractions, political posturing and phony scandals, Washington has taken its eye off the ball," Obama said Wednesday in Galesburg, Ill. "And I am here to say this needs to stop."

But even Obama knows little will change unless pressure from Americans refocuses the conversation. He acknowledged as much on Monday, as he offered supporters of Organizing for Action, the nonprofit backing Obama's agenda, a preview of his efforts to come.

"Here's the thing: It will be a pretty good speech," Obama said to scattered laughter. "But as we've learned, I've given some pretty good speeches before and then things still get stuck here in Washington."

"Which is why I'm going to need your help," he added.

So Obama set off on a two-day swing to towns far away from Washington, hoping to stockpile momentum ahead of looming fall fights over the nation's borrowing limit and federal spending levels. On Thursday, he planned to emphasize how House Republicans were threatening to undermine progress in key areas like jobs, housing, education and health care by pushing a budget that preserves deep cuts to federal agency operating budgets, the White House said.

In northeast Florida, Obama and Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx were to tour the Jacksonville Port Authority, giving the president a chance to focus on what he says is a critical need to reinvest in American infrastructure to enable future economic growth. The president will promote the need to speed up projects by expediting permitting and cutting red tape in line with an executive order he signed. The port's terminal plans to expand its rail yard and container facility under a project enabled by that program, the White House said.

The visit also marks Obama's first to the state since the acquittal of the man charged in the death of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin. The case has generated a painful, nationwide debate about racial prejudice. Meanwhile, the Republican Party of Florida planned to greet Obama with a full-page ad in the local newspaper claiming it is Obama, not Republicans, who has taken his eye off the economy.

Although Obama is offering little in the way of new policies or fresh solutions, his advisers couched the speeches as a concerted effort to put a spotlight on the economy after a six-month stretch that's been dominated by issues like gun control and immigration, as well as foreign policy crises and domestic controversies.

While official Washington's attention was elsewhere, the economy was slowly but steadily improving. The housing market is recovering, the stock market is booming, and unemployment is falling despite remaining uncomfortably high at 7.6 percent.

Obama's pleas for a more solutions-oriented Washington were tempered by his own sharply partisan tone as he accused Republicans of putting short-term politics ahead of the people's business.

"There are Republicans in Congress right now who privately agree with me on a lot of the ideas I'll be proposing. I know because they've said so," Obama said. "But they worry they'll face swift political retaliation for cooperating with me."

Likewise, the quick reactions to Obama's remarks made evident the deeply engrained obstacles to such cooperation as both parties blamed each other for blocking progress. House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California called Obama's speech "a clarion call to action" on jobs, growth and middle-class prosperity.

"Americans deserve better than the Republicans' repeal-only agenda," Pelosi said. "It's time for Republicans to join Democrats in establishing a better bargain for the middle class."

Not so, said Republicans, who panned the president's remarks as a series of repackaged ideas and empty promises.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., called it "a colossal waste of time" that "generates little more than a collective, bipartisan eye roll." GOP House Speaker John Boehner's spokesman, Brendan Buck, chimed in: "Summary of the president's speech: 'I'm going to give more speeches.'"

The broad economic themes Obama planned to illustrate Thursday will be followed up in the coming weeks by another series of speeches drilling down on key sectors such as manufacturing, education, housing, retirement security and health care. Advisers say some of those speeches will contain more specific policy proposals, both for legislation and executive action Obama can take without congressional approval.

The first of those addresses was to come Tuesday, when Obama will travel to Chattanooga, Tenn., to promote American competitiveness at an Amazon fulfillment center, which packs and ships products to online purchasers. The White House said some new policy ideas will be unveiled during that visit.

Google unveils new Nexus 7 tablet

The new Nexus 7 tablet will be available July 30, with pricing starting at $229 for a 16 GB, Wi-Fi only model.

Google unveiled a brand new Nexus 7 tablet, Android 4.3, and Chromecast, a tiny device that gets video content from phones and computers onto TVs, during an event in San Francisco on Wednesday.

"Today, we are going to talk about two things," Sundar Pichai ? senior vice president of Android, Chrome and Apps ? said as the event began. The first is a new Android device, the second, a new Chrome device.

The new Nexus 7 and Android 4.3
Pichai turned the stage over to Hugo Barra, vice president of Android product management, for the Android portion of Wednesday's announcement. Barra explained that the new Nexus 7 is a few millimeters thinner and narrower than the prior model. "It's a much more comfortable grip," he said.

The new 7-inch tablet has a better screen as well. It has gone from offering 1,280-by-800 pixels in the prior model to 1,920-by-1,200 pixels in the new one and from 216 pixels per inch (ppi) to 323 ppi. The RAM jumps from 1GB to 2 GB. The tablet has a 1.2-megapixel camera in the front and a 5-megapixel camera in the back. The new Nexus 7 will be available in three flavors: A 16GB Wi-Fi-only model for $229, a 32GB Wi-Fi-only model for $269 and a 32GB LTE-capable model for $349.

The new tablet, available July 30, will ship with Android 4.3, the newest version of Jelly Bean. While Android 4.2 introduced multi-user functionalities, Android 4.3 adds "Restricted Profiles." This feature allows apps to be restricted on a user level so that apps can behave differently based on the active user. Android 4.3 will also support Bluetooth Smart, which is a low-energy Bluetooth standard.

While Android 4.3 will ship with the new Nexus 7, it will be pushed out to the last-generation Nexus 7, Nexus 4, and Galaxy Nexus beginning on Wednesday. The HTC One and Samsung S4 which are sold with the "Nexus Experience" will receive Android 4.3 at a later time.

Chromecast costs $35 and works with your home's Wi-Fi network.

Chromecast
"The average household has three televisions," Pichai said, adding that many users struggle to get video content from their phones, tablets and laptops to their televisions. Google's solution to this problem is called Chromecast. Unsurprisingly, it's based on Chrome.

Chromecast is a small dongle which you plug into your television's HDMI input in order to push content from your phone, tablet, or computer.

Just open up YouTube, for example, and you'll find a new "Cast" button that'll get things started. You'll be able to push content, adjust the volume and more right from your phone. (And yes, you'll even have a "Cast" button on the iOS version of the YouTube app, not just on its Android counterpart.) Other apps, such as Netflix, Google Play Movies, Google Play Music and Pandora will also offer support for Chromecast.

You can seamlessly switch between controlling your television from various devices ? be they phones, tablets, or laptops ? instantly. This means that you're not suddenly going to lose control of a movie if the person who pushed it to your TV happens to leave the room.

The Chromecast dongle is priced at $35 and comes with three months of Netflix access. It can be ordered beginning on Wednesday.

New Impala tops sedans in Consumer Reports' tests

DETROIT (AP) ? The first American sedan in 20 years to earn Consumer Reports' top score is the Chevrolet Impala. Really.

The magazine has ranked the completely reworked 2014 version of the full-size car as its top U.S. sedan, based on ride, handling, quality of materials and other factors. It's the first time in two decades that a domestic brand has beaten cars from Germany and Japan.

For the Impala, it's quite a comeback. The previous version of the car was more commonly found on rental car lots than in suburban garages. Even longtime Impala fans didn't want one. Three years ago, Consumer Reports described the car's ride as "unsettled" and "nervous."

The redesigned Impala, which began arriving at dealers in April, scored 95 out of 100 points in the magazine's testing to get an "Excellent" rating. That put it ahead of traditional large car competitors like the Toyota Avalon and Chrysler 300. The Impala even outscored high-end luxury sedans such as the Audi A6 and Lexus LS460.

With that ranking, the Impala's starting price of $27,000 seems like a bargain. The Audi costs about $15,000 more. For the Lexus' base price of almost $72,000, you can buy two Impalas and have change left over.

Owners of those luxury cars may wonder if the magazine's testers got the cars mixed up.

"We're going to have to have everyone withhold their judgment until they drive one," said Jake Fisher, chief auto tester at Consumer Reports.

The Impala's performance is another sign of the three Detroit automakers' renaissance, Fisher said. All three companies nearly collapsed into financial ruin four years ago, partly because of their reputation for shoddy cars.

"We've seen a number of redesigned American models ? including the Chrysler 300, Ford Escape and Fusion, and Jeep Grand Cherokee ? deliver world-class performance in our tests," Fisher said.

The Impala, made by General Motors, surprised the magazine's auto testers with its agility, braking, paint and interior quality, and quiet, roomy cabin, Fisher said. Its score was 32 points higher than the previous model, a utilitarian car last redesigned in 2005 that was sold mainly to rental car companies.

"It really doesn't fall down in any area, and it does a lot of things really well," Fisher said of the 2014 version. "The car rides better than a Lexus ES. It's quieter than many luxury cars. It's extremely roomy." He even said the Impala "accelerates and brakes better than, say a Volkswagen GTI," a high-performance compact that is a favorite of small-car gearheads.

In addition, the Impala's interior controls, including its electronics, are simple and easy to use. Problems with complex electronics have sunk many a luxury car in the magazine's testing, including the Cadillac XTS, which shares the same underpinnings as the Impala, Fisher said.

Although the Impala isn't considered a sports car, only high-performance sports sedans from Germany, like the BMW M Series, handle better, he said.

Only two cars earned higher overall scores: the electric Tesla Model S, which starts at $62,400, and the BMW 135i coupe with a base price of $39,300.

At the National Impala Association's annual convention that's going on now in Spearfish, S.D., the new Impala is the hot topic in the parking lot as 175 members compare their restored classic Impalas and other Chevys sold from 1958 to 1970, said Mike Berry, the club's president.

"Everybody was excited about it," he said, adding that he was "just blown away" when he sat in a member's 2014 Impala Wednesday night. He said he'll buy one as his next car.

The craftsmanship of the new car is reminiscent of the classic older Impalas, said Berry, 61, of Atlantic Highlands, N.J. "It's a car that people are impressed by. The appearance. The fit-and-finish of the interior is light years ahead of what it was."

Still, the Impala won't get Consumer Reports' coveted "Recommended Buy" rating for quality and reliability, at least not yet. That's because the car is too new for the magazine to have reliability data. That data could come from surveys gathered between now and the fall when Consumer Reports unveils its annual automobile issue.

The Impala also is too new to have much of an impact on Chevrolet sales. For the first half of the year, GM sold just over 83,000 Impalas, down 15 percent from the first six months of last year. GM is hoping the redesigned car will revive the full-size segment, where sales have been falling for years due largely to old models that had not been updated.

In its last review of the old Impala model published in 2010, Consumer Reports said it was noisy and behind the times, and its outdated V-6 engine was slower than some cars with smaller four-cylinder motors.

"Handling is clumsy and powertrain refinement falls short," the magazine wrote. "There are frequent small rocking and bobbing motions, making the car feel unsettled. The highway ride is a little nervous."

Even Impala fans had trouble loving the previous model, Berry said. "The old ones just weren't very impressive," he said. "They were OK for a rental car, but I wouldn't buy one."

Oklahoma City concert allows musicians to be a rock for tornado victims

BY TIFFANY M. POOLE ? Published: July 23, 2013

Oklahomans braved heat downtown Tuesday to see some of their favorite Oklahoma bands and to support those affected by the May tornadoes.

The Rock for Oklahoma benefit concert was the brainchild of Kings of Leon manager Andy Mendelsohn, who then teamed up with Scott Booker, manager of The Flaming Lips and CEO of the Academy of Contemporary Music at The University of Central Oklahoma (or ACM@UCO).

?We were in England when the tornadoes struck, and almost immediately I started getting phone calls about organizing something,? Booker told The Oklahoman. ?The more it went on and the more horrific the devastation became, we just felt like we had to do something. We found out that Kings of Leon had already set up a date. So we just called them and teamed up to put this event on together.?

Rock for Oklahoma was a citywide effort. Chesapeake Energy Arena waived its usual venue fee, food trucks donated their proceeds to United Way, and local craftsmen and technicians donated sound and stage work.

All profits from ticket sales will be donated to the United Way of Central Oklahoma and are earmarked specifically to help Oklahomans affected by the May tornadoes. The other main goal of Rock for Oklahoma is to raise awareness and money for tornado shelters in Oklahoma.

?The idea and message of the shelters is still there, but we want to raise as much money as we can and continue the conversation,? Booker added. ?What I would like to do is make sure that people don't forget. Us having the show in July, so long after the tornadoes hit, is just a reminder that people still need help. Let's not forget, and let's keep thinking of ways to create a safer community for everyone.?

Rock for Oklahoma began at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday with local ACM@UCO bands playing outside the Chesapeake Energy Arena. At 6:30, the benefit concert moved inside and fans enjoyed the sounds of Oklahoma natives, Kings of Leon and The Flaming Lips, along with Built to Spill, Jackson Browne, Ben Kweller and Grace Potter.

Syria lashes out at US move to arm rebels

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) ? Syria lashed out Thursday at the U.S. decision to send arms to rebels fighting President Bashar Assad's troops, saying Washington is unsuitable to act as a broker at any peace negotiations in Geneva.

"The American intensions seek to continue the cycle of violence and terrorism in Syria in order to destabilize security and stability in the region," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The Obama administration opposed providing any lethal assistance to Syria's rebels until last month, but is now moving ahead with sending weapons to vetted rebels after securing the approval of the House and Senate Intelligence committees.

The White House acknowledged that momentum in the conflict has shifted as the Lebanese militant Hezbollah group and Iran have helped Assad's forces.

President Barack Obama and his national security team still have yet to say publicly what weapons they'll provide the Syrian opposition and when they'll deliver them. There has also been concern in the West that U.S. weapons could end up in the hands of al-Qaida-linked groups.

At the same time, the United States and Russia have been working to set up a peace conference in Geneva to try end Syria's civil war, now in its third year. More than 93,000 people have been killed since the conflict erupted in March 2011, according to the United Nations.

No official date has been set for the Geneva conference as the opposition refuses to attend any talks that are not about Assad's departure. Government officials say participation in the conference should be without preconditions.

"Washington's decision to send arms to terrorists in Syria confirms that the American administration is not fair in efforts to find a political solution and hold an international conference in Geneva," said Syrian state TV, citing an unnamed Foreign Ministry official.

By contrast, the main Western-backed Syrian opposition group welcomed Washington's decision on weapons, describing it as a "move forward."

The Syrian National Coalition said in a statement Thursday that it was committed to ensuring the arms reach only those loyal to the Coalition and its affiliated military councils ? indicating it would try to prevent U.S. weapons from reaching al-Qaida fighters in Syria.

Also Thursday, Syrian government troops bombarded the central city of Homs and, backed by Hezbollah fighters, tried to storm a rebel-held neighborhood in the area, according to activist groups.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said regime forces bombarded the northern neighborhood of Khaldiyeh in preparation for a ground assault. It had no immediate word on casualties.

The Local Coordination Committees, another activist group, said troops were hitting Khaldiyeh with mortars.

In late June, government forces launched a major offensive on Homs, a strategic city of about 1 million residents located on the road between the capital Damascus and regime strongholds on the Mediterranean coast.

The Observatory, which has a network of activists on the ground, said government forces captured the central town of Sukhna in Homs province.

The fighting there killed several rebels, including the local commander of an al-Qaida-linked group, the Observatory said. It did not name the commander of Jabhat al-Nusra group, also known as the Nusra Front in English, but said he was an Iraqi citizen.

The fighting in Syria has increasingly taken on sectarian undertones as Assad enjoys support from many in his Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam, while the rebels are mainly Sunnis.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) ? Brazilian security forces blamed each other on Tuesday for the mob scenes that erupted around Pope Francis when he was dogged by a frantic crowd of faithful Catholics after his arrival in the country.

The chaotic crowds mobbing Francis on Monday afternoon raised questions about what plans are in place to protect the pontiff, and who is responsible for carrying them out.

No one took responsibility for the traffic fiasco, which began when the driver of the car the pope was riding in made a wrong turn, following the lead car in an official motorcade. It was unclear who was in that first vehicle, or what agency the driver worked for.

The Federal Police are mostly in charge of the pope's security in Brazil, though when he travels to a rural part of Rio this weekend, the army will secure the massive pasture where he'll celebrate Mass.

Officials with the Federal Police who have control of the pope's security in urban Rio told the local press that the blame belonged to Federal Highway Police. But highway police officials said they were just following specifications laid out by the Federal Police. Neither agency returned calls seeking more information on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Rio mayor's office said it knew nothing about the plan for the pope's travel from the airport to the city center while even the secretary general for President Dilma Rousseff said he didn't know who was to blame but that he was "relieved" no harm came to Francis.

Rio Transportation Secretary Carlos Osorio said the Fiat Francis was riding in from the airport to the city center inadvertently turned into the wrong side of a 12-lane thoroughfare, known as Avenida Presidente Vargas. Instead of taking the left lanes that were free of traffic, the car turned into the right lanes cluttered with buses and taxis, forcing the pontiff's car to stop, he said.

It wasn't the best means to project confidence on security arrangements for a nation that saw widespread anti-government protests paralyze scores of cities last month and that's preparing to host the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics.

"I was so surprised! Maybe I'm looking at it from a foreign perspective, but it seemed odd that the people were allowed that close on the roads," said the Rev. Joseph Tan, a priest from the Philippines, echoing the reaction of many in Rio for the papal visit. "In the Philippines, people would have gathered to get a glimpse, but nothing like what we saw. But that's the pope's personality, he was just being himself."

The mob scene didn't seem to faze Francis, however. The "slum pope," as he was dubbed in his native Argentina for the amount of time he spent in dangerous, impoverished areas, smiled as his car was surrounded. He kept his window rolled down and even kissed a baby passed into the vehicle by its mother.

Papal spokesman Rev. Federico Lombardi made clear that despite the mobs, Francis wouldn't change his decision to use an open-air vehicle and specifically planned to use the open car for the very events expected to draw the largest crowds: a speech on Copacabana beach on Wednesday, a Way of the Cross procession on Friday, and a weekend vigil and Mass in a rural part of Rio.

Lombardi said the pontiff deliberately chose to use the same car he uses in St. Peter's Square, and not the bulletproof popemobile, to be closer to people and interact with them. But that square is a closed and controlled; Vatican and Italian police ring the square, the faithful are fenced into pens, and bodyguards trail the car at all times.

But how Vatican and Brazilian authorities decide to organize his security going forward is ultimately not the pope's responsibility, Lombardi said. "Obviously he desires to have a possibly very direct contact with the people. This is clear, and not a militarization of the situation," said the spokesman. "But the concrete solutions are not chosen by him."

Authorities in Brazil earlier said about 10,000 police officers and more than 14,000 soldiers would take part in the overall papal security plan, but on Monday virtually no uniformed officers were seen along the route as Francis was mobbed by the crowds.

There were few barricades set up along the route and thousands of faithful easily made their way onto streets that were meant to be shut off from the public. In some places along the route, people could be seen forming "human chains" to keep the crowds at bay.

About three dozen plain-clothes officers including the pope's personal bodyguards and some Brazilian officers were seen surrounding the pope's vehicles, trying desperately to push the crowds back

Paulo Storani, a Rio-based security consultant who spent nearly 30 years on the city's police force and was a captain in an elite unit used to clear out slums, said the fiasco seen Monday had to be analyzed in two ways.

"From the point of view of a head of state, and the pope is a head of state, it's unacceptable what happened. The proximity people had with him was a huge risk, even for his image," Storani said. "On the other hand, in the case of a head of a church and having a charismatic figure like this pope, the situation is different because he wants to be close to the people.

"The police intelligence units have to do a lot more work to detect potential threats to the pope's security and there needs to be a bigger presence of plainclothes officers in the middle of the masses to ensure his security," he added.

There was no word on whether Francis would agree to a heavier security presence when he travels to the city of Aparecida on Wednesday, or holds a meeting with Catholic youth on Copacabana beach that is expected to draw a crowd of 1 million on Thursday.

But many changes seemed unlikely.

Francis made clear even before he was pope that the Catholic Church must stop being so closed and self-referential and go to the edges of the world to interact with the most marginalized. Many cardinals point to a speech Francis made as Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, days before he was elected pope, as the mission statement that essentially got him elected.

In that pre-conclave speech, Bergoglio said the church must "move toward the peripheries, not only geographic but also existential: those of sin, suffering, injustice, ignorance and religious abstention, thought and all misery."

"When the church does not emerge from itself to evangelize, it becomes self-referential and therefore becomes sick. ... The evils that, over time, occur in ecclesiastical institutions have their root in (being self-referential), a kind of theological narcissism," Bergoglio said then.

After becoming pope, he followed those words up with actions even before his Rio trip. His first parish visit in Rome was to a church in a poor neighborhood on the capital's farthest outskirts. His first trip outside Rome was to the most peripheral part of Italy, Lampedusa, a speck of an island closer to Africa than the Italian mainland, where he mourned the deaths of refugees trying to reach Europe.

Francis is visiting his home continent for the first time since becoming pontiff, with his visit coinciding with the church's World Youth Day, an event held every three years to bring young Catholics together in an effort to inject new energy in the church.

He will celebrate two Masses expected to each draw more than 1 million people: one on Copacabana beach and the other in a rural pasture. He'll also visit a slum in Rio in an area known by locals as the Gaza Strip because of its heavy violence before police "pacified" it in January, pushing out powerful drug gangs and setting up a permanent outpost.

White House asks House not to undercut NSA program

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The White House is urging lawmakers in the House to reject legislation that would undercut the National Security Agency's ability to collect phone records of millions of Americans.

The House is likely to vote Wednesday on an amendment to a defense spending bill that would end the NSA's authority under the Patriot Act, preventing the agency from collecting records unless an individual is under investigation.

White House spokesman Jay Carney says the Obama administration welcomes an ongoing debate on privacy and national security. But he says the House measure would hastily dismantle a counterterrorism tool. He says it's a blunt approach that didn't result from an informed or open process.

Carney says the administration prefers an approach that reviews what tools can best secure the U.S.
