Oklahomans braved heat downtown Tuesday to see some of their favorite Oklahoma bands and to support those affected by the May tornadoes.
The Rock for Oklahoma benefit concert was the brainchild of Kings of Leon manager Andy Mendelsohn, who then teamed up with Scott Booker, manager of The Flaming Lips and CEO of the Academy of Contemporary Music at The University of Central Oklahoma (or ACM@UCO).
?We were in England when the tornadoes struck, and almost immediately I started getting phone calls about organizing something,? Booker told The Oklahoman. ?The more it went on and the more horrific the devastation became, we just felt like we had to do something. We found out that Kings of Leon had already set up a date. So we just called them and teamed up to put this event on together.?
Rock for Oklahoma was a citywide effort. Chesapeake Energy Arena waived its usual venue fee, food trucks donated their proceeds to United Way, and local craftsmen and technicians donated sound and stage work.
All profits from ticket sales will be donated to the United Way of Central Oklahoma and are earmarked specifically to help Oklahomans affected by the May tornadoes. The other main goal of Rock for Oklahoma is to raise awareness and money for tornado shelters in Oklahoma.
?The idea and message of the shelters is still there, but we want to raise as much money as we can and continue the conversation,? Booker added. ?What I would like to do is make sure that people don't forget. Us having the show in July, so long after the tornadoes hit, is just a reminder that people still need help. Let's not forget, and let's keep thinking of ways to create a safer community for everyone.?
Rock for Oklahoma began at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday with local ACM@UCO bands playing outside the Chesapeake Energy Arena. At 6:30, the benefit concert moved inside and fans enjoyed the sounds of Oklahoma natives, Kings of Leon and The Flaming Lips, along with Built to Spill, Jackson Browne, Ben Kweller and Grace Potter.
